Is it possible that home tests positive, blood negative?

Hi; I am really in an exasperating situation; I have 3 children, last one when I was 40. I am now 52 and I have been getting my periods like clockwork until this past month, and am over 2 weeks late. I tested positive on fancy "clearblue" test a week ago, called my ob/gyn office, and they sent me for blood test. It came back negative, and Dr. said my FSH was 60 meaning menopause. I was told that was why the false positive. I was devastated, and a few days ago, I bought a new and different pregnancy test, and it was positive! I feel devasted as I was told blood test was definitive. Is this possible?? My period has not started yet. Also, my family history is menopause very late 50's...I so want this to be possible....

I agree with andreasmom - if your family dr can give you the test with the levels - not the yes/no - go for it.... GOOD LUCK

If you family practitioner can do the test and give you the levels go right ahead! Don't wait, schedule an appt asap.  I'm no doctor but I just can't see how FSH levels can turn a HPT positive.

Wow; the things I am learning from you ladies, just when I had given up. THANK YOU. My ob/gyn said she would see me in July for annual exam, and said I could be one of those people that just "stop" without warning; also, she said not to be afraid if I got my period before my regular appointment! I just want to scream. She pretty much ruled out any possibility as I was able to ask if it was a definitive NO (on my one phonecon) and she said it was definitive. Again, the rationale for false positive was FSH levels making my body go out of whack! Maybe I should schedule with my family practitioner and ask for the specific levels? (I am in remote place).

It IS possible.  Depending on the type of blood test...qualitative vs. quantative.  If they did the yes/no blood test, some labs don't consider it positive unless it's anywhere from 5-25 hcg whereas some hpt's can detect hcg as little as 12.5 so it really depends on the sensitivity of the test. I could be wrong, but i've never heard of menopause causing false positive pregnancy tests.  I agree with the other ladies.  Go back to your doc or to a different doc and ask for your BETA HCG levels.

I agree with Melka76, go back to your dr and ask them to give you another test and to tell you your hcg levels.  It has happened may times that a hpt detects the pregnancy even before the dr do.  HPT tests are ultra sensitive nowadays.  I don't see how menopause can turn a hpt test positive.  Good luck and Keep us posted!

Thank you for your encouragement! I took the second test a few days ago, and made sure it was different brand-positive! The doctor told me on phone that high FSH was probably reason for false pregnancy (that was after my first HPT). I was so discouraged...It is also strange that I have not been this late nor did I ever have menopause warning signs--just missed period.

I am sure it is possible - I had a blood test done at my family dr very early after my IVF implantation - 6 days I think and it was negative - they just gave me the yes/no not the actual level - I am 33 weeks now.  I do not think there are any chemicals in your body at menopause that would create a positibve HCG reading in a HPT... call your dr again and ask for a blood test that give you the HCG level... good luck!
