Is this normal??

I'm almost 40 years old and 5-6 weeks pregnant.  I've been having brown/pink discharge for almost a week.   I've been pretty much uncomfortable "down south" since I got pregnant, but this past weekend I was awake at 2am because of the pain.  We're talking pain you have "breath" through.  I was pretty much laid up and miserable all day.  Now it's the next day and I'm still in a lot of pain, no change in the discharge, maybe slightly "thicker".  I felt ok when I woke up this morning, but now the pain is back.  Is this normal? I'm so uncomfortable and almost in tears.  Thanks in advance, I don't really have anyone to talk to about this, my Mom is long deceased :-(

It was a miscarriage :-(

If this helps anyone it started as brownish discharge on 5/14.  By the weekend I was very emotional and achy.  Yesterday some bleeding and very bad pain  that I had to curse through.  I also got very emotional and had a crying fit.  Went to bed at 7:30, woke up at 2am to pee, but couldn't go back to sleep.  Felt burning down there, like a UTI.  Got up, let the dogs out, came back in and there it was, in my pad . . . today still crampy but it's like a regular period

Thank you for the responses. . . .

I already have a Dr appt and ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow.  This morning the spotting turned bright red with tissue.  I was at work and feeling light headed so I came home. My husband wanted me to go to the ER, but I hate hospitals, they make my anxiety spiral out of control. Still hurting, like it's that time of the month :-(

Oh, and my breasts don't hurt as much as they did.  Before, they would ache just getting out of bed in the morning, but now barely any pain at all . . .

First of all, please don't panic. You should always consult your doctor when in doubt. If it's after hours, go to ER. That's exactly what I did! I'm 37 years old and first time pregnant. I've experienced pain/pressure and bleeding at 6 wks of my pregnancy. I'm not saying spotting, I'm saying bleeding fresh blood. On top of it, I felt so weak. I thought I was having a miscarriage.
Turned out, it was nothing. They tested my blood and did ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. I was sent home with an advice to take it easy and rest. They said that bleeding/spotting occurs often during first weeks of pregnancy. They always tell you to come back if it happens again but the bleeding stopped. I still felt the pressure/pain but not real cramps. By week 7 it got better. I'm 19 wks and feeling awesome. Good luck and wishing you all the best!

This does not sound normal to me.  Bleeding and discharge can be normal but pain like you describe is not normal in early pregnancy.  I don't want to scare you but this could indicate a sign of a possible miscarriage - bleeding accompanied by cramps.  But it is also entirely possible that something else is going on.  Have you had your first OB appointment yet?  I would call your doctor, let them know what is going on, and ask to be seen.

Fingers crossed for you - and congrats!  I had my first baby at 39.

If at any time during a pregnancy there is blood or discharge that looks like blood, you should call the doctor. It could also be implantation spotting, which I have read on numerous articles is normal during the 6th week of pregnancy. The pain could be because of your uterus growing or it may be something else. But to just be safe, I would call the doctor and let him or her know.
