MH facebook group

Yesterday I was added to a FB group for MH members, I was added without having to accept so when I got home from work I unjoined.  I did see that people were putting their MH nick with their real name and I would just like to caution about doing this.  In this group people are being added at whim and you don't really know them.  Do you really want random people knowing your full name, city, pics of kids maybe even telephone number depending on what info you store on FB?  I don't think it is safe. Anyway think about it, talk it over with your dh before you act.  I just think of the cases where some poor woman had her baby cut out of her belly and I don't think strangers knowing your pg info +where you live being a good idea....

In those groups, if you aren't actually "friends" with the other group members, they can't see any more of your information than any stranger clicking on your name can. If your wall and pictures and info are "private" they can't see it.

For many years, I was part of a parenting message board on AOL. We all became very close friends, with some of us meeting in person. The AOL message boards closed, so several of us are now on an "AOL Board" group on FB. If I'm not friends with someone in the group, all they can see is what I actually post on that page.

Hmmm, I never got an invite:( Im friends with a few select friends from MH on FB and personally wouldnt have a problem with this if its privite:)

The group that everyone is talking about is very private. Like others have said, the only info the people can see in the group if you are not actual friends with them on FB is the same info any stranger can see if they are trying to view your profile. It depends on your privacy settings.

It's a great group for people who don't get over here on MH as much anymore but still want to stay in touch with their MH friends. A lot of us in that group are also "friends" on FB and here on MH! Very private. As private as you want it to be. No reason for concern.

Its a good warning Meli. I don't let anyone see my personal info. they can see my hometown once they are accepted as my friend, but nothing else. no address, no phone number, no email addy...even my friends. you just never know. my pics are only available to a select few friends and family members as well, not everyone on my friends list, but my posts can be seen by everyone...which is why, when I went out of town this past weekend, I didn't say anything about it until I was already home. I've heard stories where people have posted before about going on trips and come home to their house ransacked and robbed.

So I'm a very paranoid person when it comes to this..however, I find the MH group to be safe. they can't see anything other than my name and what I choose to share in the group. in fact, if they try to add me as a friend all they'll see is my name and an option to add me as a friend. so I'm comfortable with it..and anyone who is considering joining it, I recommend weighing it against your comfort level. but I personally decided it was safe enough :).

The only info anyone can see (if they aren't on your friends list) is whatever you have publicly displayed on your profile page.   This is the same info everyone sees before you accept a friends request.   No one is getting other info that you haven't already shown the entire FB population.

I was added to the group without permission.  I went to the page after my email alert and saw my picture and name and everything.  I had to look around at how to unsubscribe.  I didn't investigate at whether I could click on another persons name and be taken to their info or pics so I don't know about that but I know people saw my whole first and last name and my photo.  Not a big deal if I am picking the MH members I want to be on my FB but on this group someone else is doing the picking.  I may just be paranoid but it worried me as I have 3 little girls at home.  Even if people can't see your profile I think many were/do feel safer because it was FB.  People were giving out their MH nic+ their real first and last name.  You just don't know who might be on the FB group lurking and collecting personal information that you give out.  I mean who feals completely safe giving out their first and last name on MH?  It is the same thing if you are not picking the people in the group.  Anyway that is my last comment.  I just wanted people to be aware in case they aren't comfortable with it

You should try Facebook, it's a great way to keep in touch. I do keep my info private though and I would be unhappy if I were somehow added to a group without pemission.

Thanks Amanda!! I love being stuck with you! Yes, you should come on over to FB! It is great there! That is how I stay in touch with many MH members!

I should probably try FB...no idea how it works, so I guess I misunderstood.  I think I am pretty much the only person left on the earth not on it..lol.

I am friends with many MH members on FB. I do not have a problem with that at all! By the way I did not give an invite to this group! : )

so far the group is just those that talk about many things on here, i can see if it were open but its private.  i dont think you can join unless admin of the group allows it.  its a fun way to see people and have a real time chat!

ok but people are putting their real names on there...  first and last, anyway not sure how much they can really see...  or how safe people may be lulled into feeling and then revieling more of themselves because they feel it is more private.  Anyway just a warning for those more paranoid folks like me.

Like someone stated, only if they are your ACTUAL  friend on your list can they see your info.. this is just a group, so if your page is not private like it should be, then yea someone could see yourinfo, but people should be smart enough to make it private and if it is private only your friends can see it..

I don't have my phone...  but on FB I choose my friends as only people I know and it is private to everyone else

Meli- do you have your city and phone number listed on your FB page?  If you do that info is available to anyone that wants to take the time to scan through names.   I do not have that personal info on my page at all.   By using FB you are giving access to info so I don't think joining a MH group is any different.

It is great if you are comfortable with it.  It is private for the members of the group but how do you know who is in the group???  could a wako possibly enter the group or do we think there are no wakos that go on MH?  I mean they are all strangers and while I feel comfortable with having a few members on MH be FB friends I like to determine who those are not what some other person may think are safe people.  Just something to think about.  There are a million people on MH and any one of those could be added to the FB group.

All the content is private.   It was formed as a way to keep in touch without everyone seeing everything.   I personally think it was nice.

Thanks for the info and warning Mel.  I know there are several MH FB groups, but not being a FB member I don't know much about them.  I don't understand how you can be added without your consent?  I think that would be the part that concerns me the most.  How odd.  Appreciate you sending the info along.
