Medically prescribed percocet and pregnancy.

Ok.. I have severe pain problems with my back - sciatica, torn disc, herniated disc & buldging disk. I have been on pain meds for 10 years.. Vicodan stopped working so i was switched to perocet (currently taking 5-10 mg every 4 hours)...
The pain mgmt dr i went to gave me 2 injections in my back.. to stop the sciatica - didnt work and he also at that time, knowing i was pregnant, prescribed me percocet (same dose). After I was 1/2 way threw the presc. I called and asked what i was suppose to do now? They said to go to physical therapy and to me it seemed like they didnt want anything to do with me now b/c im pregnant..... AAAHHHH.. I dont know what to do! I am in so much pain. Today is the first day of withdrawl and i am so worried that i am going to go into preterm labor (im only 27 weeks)

My obgyn knows that i have been on this med and i dont think he would want me to quit cold turkey.. I wonder if I could have my obgyn authorize my pain mgmt doctor to give me my perks!
I do plan to taper-off closer to my due date so the baby has a lower risk of withdrawling
Any help is much appreciated!!

You are correct in that it is dangerous to quit cold turkey during a pregnancy.  Tapering and withdrawing needs to be done correctly under medical supervision.

Also, many women need to take various meds to manage pain (and other conditions) during pregnancy.  I would try to find someone who will work with you.  You certainly can't go around in pain all the time.  Yes, these meds are dangerous to the fetus when abused, but if taken as prescribed and under medical supervision, you can have a healthy pregnancy.  Find a Dr. that will look into other options for you.  Best of luck, and congrats on your pregnancy.

If they are concerned about the routine percocet, perhaps an alternative can be prescribed.
