Neural Tube Defects?

Hi, I just had my 2nd appt today and I am 14 weeks.  My dh and I have declined any testing even though I am 38.  One test my dr did suggest was the blood test at 16 weeks for neural tube defects because I had the methotrexate shot on nov 9th and my numbers were down at 9 by the 23rd.  I was probably pregnant on nov 30th.  She told me that it will make sure that we are prepared if there is a neural tube defect and they can have the right drs there at the time of birth and I can be followed more closely at the end of the pregnancy.  What exactly is an neural tube defect and has anyone had a similar situation?  Has anyone been pregnant so close after the methotrexate shot?

Just wanted to say good luck to you.  I had an ectopic about a year ago and went through metho.  Not fun.  At one point my levels started rising  and they thought I might be preg again, which was scary.  Part of me was hoping it was true though.

I believe the odds really are in your favor.

Jennifer- I'm sure all will be fine! And make sure you talk to a genetics counselor before making too much of the results. =) I'll be waiting on the results!!

Jennifer- I had this test done and it came back positive twice for spina bifida. Don't freak out if your's comes back positive, age is a factor, Meli is right, low folic acid can cause it, and you will know more if you have a level ll ultrasound done (if it comes back positive).  They have a high rate of false positives. They had mine wrong because they had my due date wrong. When I went to see the genetics counselor she explained to me that lots of things are factors in positives. BUT I am glad I had it done, 1) if something would have been wrong they would have known to have the right doctors on board 2) reassurance that things were perfect with Brayden!! 3) I learned so much just talking to the genetics counselor that I'm less fearful now of these tests and the results!!

Good Luck!!
Patty

You will be fine,

I know spina bifida is one neural tube defect...don't know much about it though..  I think it's good you're going the test, that way you'll be more prepared.  But I have a feeling your angel's gonna be perfect.   :)

quick google search... this may be what leads to the neural tube defect

It acts by inhibiting the metabolism of folic acid.

no idea about the defect just thought I would put that in...

good luck you will be in my prayers,... are you doing the test?
