Positive result from AFP...Help?!

Is there anyone that has had an AFP test with test result of 1 in 10 for down syndrome?? My husband and I just found this out today and we are very very concerned...I am so upset I don't know what to think. I know that I heard AFP tests can have false-positive results but because my odds are so high I'm FREAKED out to say the least. Has anyone had this experience? I would really appreciate some feedback on this. THANKS.

I would never have that test.  I hear you automatically get a positive if you are over 35.  I went straight for the amnio.

Good luck to you.  What is your next step?

my dh and i refuse testing due to all the high false positive results.  my dr asked us if we would abort the pregnancy under any circumstances...our answer was no.  it just saves me months of worry.  don't get me wrong, i understand some people would like to be prepared.  i would say you have to make some other decisions for other means of testing now or let it go and try to relax.  :)

The AFP test has a very high rate of inaccurate results. My doctor won't even do that test anymore because he is so unsatisfied with the test's inaccuracies. My sister in law was worried most of her pregnancy because of the AFP results and her baby was absolutely fine.

Serveral others on here have had positive results. Those tests have an extremely high incidence of false positives.  I read that out of 50 positive results only one or two babies will actually be born with a chromosome defect.

I know it is difficult but try not to give that screening more credit than it is worth.  Take care.  I wish the very best for you and your family.
