Pregnant and Addicted

Im not looking to be judged so please if you only have negative things to say don't post. Im currently 38 weeks pregnant. I've struggled with opiate addiction for 2 years before getting pregnant. I was using heroin before finding out at 4 weeks. I stopped the same day I found out. I wasn't scared of withdrawing because I wasn't using a lot or everyday. Fast forward to 30 weeks I admitted to the ICU for severe asthma. They kept me there for 5 days. While in there I experienced my first migraine and the doctor gave me an iv of morphine. He also sent me home with percocets in case I had more. Well I should have known better but thought I could control it. At 32 weeks I relapsed on heroin. I don't use IV and have used a maximum 0.05 of a gram a day (or half of a pack). I started to get scared of quitting cold turkey so for the past week I've tapered down to probably 0.025 of a gram ( or about a quarter of a pack. Its really such a small amount and im hoping I can stop completely. I don't feel any withdrawals and since I have only been using once a day I go about 24 hours each time. I know no one can tell me if imy baby will experience withdrawal but if anyone has a similar story id love to hear it. I have told my doctor and she said this late in pregnancy she wouldn't suggest quitting. However, if anyone has used heroin tey know a quarter of a pack is a very small amount. Im scared for my child...please share your experience.

Sounds like you are a very strong person!  Your Baby may or may not experience withdrawal.  Your Baby meu also be more colicky for the first few weeks.  Holding him skin to skin (kangaroo care) and beat feeding have both been found to be very very helpful! Also, ask your doctor about Suboxone. It's a medication used for opiate addiction to help keep people clean and reduces the risks of relapse.  You might have to see a pain medication doctor for it but it's used alot these days and had been used quite a bit in pregnancy/breastfeeding safely with no long ten harmful effects to baby. Good luck! Hang on there. Talk to your on about possible testing of your baby ayer birth and they can probably help you avoid cos

Just an fyi when you deliver at the hospital f r om my understanding babies are tested. If they find drugs in the babies system by law they have to call child protective services. They could take your child from your right there before an investigation.  I don't know the laws but my friends sister was addicited to cocain and he  had drugs in his system when he was born and they took him from her.  Keep working at getting off the drugs, you can do it!!!

Hey.. I dont have any experience with drug addiction either but I can tell you a couple of things:

First.. im so proud of you that you were able to control your habbit like that for your child. It shows a lot of courage and will power... second... idk if you told the doc before he put u on morphine that you are at a risk of relapse but if you didn't,  for future reference let them know... third, since you are so close to delivering the baby, you will have to wait and watch... if I were you I would monitor the babys activity everyday like how much its moving, what time of day, n before n after drug administration.  Idk how small of a dose is .0025 but try to cut that too.. use it like meds... slowly get yourself off of it before labor but at the same time monitor the baby very closely n speak with your OB. you seem like a pretty determined person.. im sure you can do it again. :)

Good luck to you n ur baby. Hope that he or she is fine :)
