Progesterone supplement

by mommyin10, Jan 29, 2008 09:24AM
Good morning !  I had a blood test last week for progesterone & my doctor says my level is 11, which is fine, but she would like it to be in the 20s.  So, I'm going in tomorrow to get progesterone.  Anyone who has done this, it is something you use every day or once a week??  And did you have any side effects or discomfort? I know I'll find out soon enough, but I appreciate the comments and suggestions I've received on this site :)

I had suppositories that I inserted 2x a day for the first 12 weeks and then slowly got weaned off up to 14 weeks. Side effects can be gassiness, bloating, slight nausea, headaches, etc but obviously the benefits outweigh the side effects

Hi.  Thanks for the reply !  You definitely are right about the benefits outweighing the side effects !  I appreciate knowing what to expect :)

I had no side effects except not m/c and that is a good side effect... just remember that it is important to take them everyday as a drop in progesterone is what causes af to come...  11 is low.. you are pg right now?  how far along?  I didn't get weaned off at 12w they say you can just stop because your placenta takes over from there.  good luck...

I did progesterone 2x a day, then 3x a day, then progesterone shots (for 40 nights) with both pregnancies.  ooey and gooey, but I don't remember any side effects either.  Most docs like to see numbers up in the 20s.  And I just stopped mine also at the 12 week mark.

good luck!

Hi.  Looks like I left out an important point, I am not pregnant.  I'm ttc & will be 36 this summer.  My doctor said that she'd like to see my levels higher, as my luteal phase is short, fluctuating between 9-10 days.  Had you used progesterone while trying to conceive or only after becoming pregnant? Is it still the same 2Xdaily when TTC? I have an appt. today, so will find out the details, but thanks so much for your comments ! :)

you should only use AFTER ovulation... you pretty much need to know when you ov because if you take it too soon you wont good luck.. I did that with my 2 dd while doing fertility treatments

Technically you would say I used it TTC since I started with the suppositories immediately after ovulation and the IUI.  That was their standard protocol.  You would quit using the suppositories if your period were to start.  Luck would have it that I got pregnant on the first try.

Second pregnancy, started using progesterone suppositories after positive preg test, since the pregnancy was a total surprise.

Thanks !  I got my prescription today & my doctor said to start using the suppositories on cd16 (since I have been ovulating around cd 17-18).

Melimeli, Are you saying I shouldn't use it till after ovulation or does 1-2 days really make much of a difference?  I didn't ask that question 'cause I just came home and saw your post.  I do know what day I ovulate, so should I just wait till then??

lhughes,  I sure hope I have the luck you had !  :)

Thanks for the support & baby dust !  :)
Yes, I'm using opks.  So, my doctor said to take the prog. supp. starting on cd16, since my Ov date is usually cd17-18, somewhere around there.
