Question re thin endometrial (Uterine) lining and possibility of sustaining a pregnancy

by GiGiGiGi, Jun 06, 2009 02:16PM
Hi Ladies.

My DH and I have been trying for ages.  I'm 36 and he's 32.  We have been seeing an RE and the preliminary tests that he ran came back normal (OK SA, HSG, BW)

He has been trying to get me to have a Laparoscopy, but I was feeling that perhaps it was a little premature - considering the recovery time and it requires a general anaesthetic)

The RE did an ultrasound of CD13.  He said that he could see a follicle that measured 20 mm, so he knew that I had not yet ovulated.  When he checked my uterus he said that the lining was too thin, measuring 7mm.

My question is this:  Has anyone out there had a successful pregnancy with a lining of 7mm?  Am I just beating my head against a brick wall by TTC with such a thin lining?  Should I just wait until this problem is corrected?

The RE did, however, give me a pres for Clomid.  Not sure what the logic is behind that since I do ovulate on my own.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks a bunch,

Gigi

I am not entirely certain on this, but I can tell you what I think might be the reason.  One of the things clomide does is increase your progesterone levels. I too was on it although I have absolutely no problem conceiving on my own.  i think (although absolutely not certain) that progesterone may thicken your uterine lining.  Maybe ask him what his rational is.  If you do decide on clomide, I have a couple of tips for you that might make your experience with it more positive...let me know.

Good luck to you!!!

Thanks for the quick response.  Funny thing is - I asked the RE about the effect on the lining and he said that it was 50/50 that it would actually THIN it?!!

Of course I wasnt quick enough to then ask him why he would presribe that for me if the likelihood that it would thin the lining.  In fact, I have not been able to find anything online that says Clomid could thicken the lining.  Most people report thinning of the lining with Clomid.

Plus he gave me 100mg.  50mg seems to be the standard starting dosage.

I dunno about that guy... I think I'm just gonna stick with my acupuncturist for a while, and hope that he can thicken the lining through acupuncture.

clomid thinned my lining so I had to move to injectables which thickened it up and was able to concieve...  also many do baby aspirin to help thickin the lining

I gave a really bad answer...sorry GiGi.  Now that I think about it I remember reading the same thing.  I take baby asprin as well and have for a few months. Sorry hon, should have thought that through better.

Hey Adgal - no big deal.  Really one would think that there must be a reason for him to give that to me.  All I could come up with is that maybe he was wanting me to release multiple eggs thus increasing the chance of ONE of them being fertilized and implanting.

Maybe there are some people out there whose lining is not thinned by Clomid - however - if there are - I cant seem to find them on the net.

I think I'm gonna start myself on baby aspirin.  Forget the clomid - for now anyways.

The uterine lining, or endometrium, is composed of the cells that line the womb. This lining thickens each month in preparation for a possible pregnancy. But some women have a lining that is too thin, causing skipped menstrual cycles or difficulty in getting pregnant. One way to address these issues is to thicken the uterine lining with the help of progesterone therapy.

I think i will wait until summer is over before heading back to the RE.  I'm not gonna take the Clomid.  I will continue with acupuncture which I am CERTAIN increased the lining last month because I had an unusually heavy AF - normally i'm light.

In the fall I will go back to the RE and ask for something to go along with the Clomid to help the lining.  Or maybe by then the acupuncture will have had a chance to increase the lining without the use of drugs.

I cant seem to find anyone who conceived with a lining of 7mm.  7 seems to be the borderline between possible and impossible LOL.

Thanks for your input and advice ladies.

Just noticed this post. My FET was almost cancelled due to the lining. My RE said that it had to be 7 mm or greater. They extended the date of the transfer by 2 extra days. I am also going for acupuncture . My FET is tomorrow. I will ask him again what it measures and let you know.

That would  be great if you could ask the doc about that for me.  It seems that 7mm is the cutoff between normal and thing, but  it makes me feel better knowing that some doctors out there think that 7mm is ok.

What are your thoughts on acupuncture?  I have been very impressed with the changes that i have noticed since starting.  Unfortunately, my acupuncturist went on holidays this past week and i think i could have used a treatment - but whatcha gonna do?  I guess he is entitled to some time off once in a while.

I hope that all goes well for you tomorrow and can hardly wait to read about your BFP!
