Quit smoking before pregnancy

Hello everyone !

I am 36 and a bit worried about pregnancy because I have no kid for now but with my husband we are seriously considering the fact that we shouldn't waste any more time. But the fact is that we both smoke and apparently, smoking is not the best way to be pregnant (http://pregnancy.doctissimo.com/pregnancy-health/pregnancy-cigarettes-and-alcohol/tobacco-pregnancy-a-high-risk-combination.html) :(

Do you have any advice to help me quit smoking (while my husband is a smoker!)

Thank you very much everyone !

I think it would be beneficial for both you and your husband to quit smoking.  Second hand smoke is just as dangerous and you don' t need to be around it once you are pregnant.  Aside from that it's not healthy for a child to be around cigarette smoke either.

Talk with your physician about aids to help you quit. But, as KarenDiane said, you have to have a reason that is worth it to you.  For me, I quit smoking cold turkey the day after I found out I was pregnant with my second child.  I have not had a cigarette since.  It will be 10 years this december.  I wanted my kids to be healthy and that was reason enough for me.

I smoked for years, but I quit with every pregnancy. You have to have a reason to quit or all the drugs in the world won't help you. I did use the patch one time and that worked well for me. Happynifer is right, it'll be much, much harder if your husband doesn't quit, but if he continues to smoke, have him smoke outside.

I too smoked for a very very long time.  It's tough to quit,  but when you have a goal like getting pregnant and having a baby, that helps a great deal.  There are so many quit smoking aids on the market, and they definately help.  However, they won't work it you don't want to quit.  One of the things I did was make a list of all the reasons I was quitting and carried it with me.  Having a baby was top of that list.  After I became pregnant, I carried around his first ultrasound picture with me to remind me.

Research the possible negative effects smoking can have on your unborn child...low birthweight, asthma and other illness, etc. etc.  I can guarantee that will also help.

Quit before you get pregnant.  Smoking is extremely harmful to an unborn baby (and as happynifer mentioned, second hand smoke is equally harmful), but it can also lower your chances of conception.  It does impact fertility.

Good luck to you...I know it is really really hard, but you can do it!!

he needs to quit too.
second hand smoke is almost as bad for the baby as you smoking....and besides you need each other's support to quit.  it's like saying you can't have chocolate but i am going to eat it in front of you everyday.....and nicotine is far more addicitve.
talk to your doctor.
talk to your husband.
if you are serious about having a baby, then you both need to quit.

I have never been a smoker.(family full of them didnt like it)  My husband was a pack and a half a day.  He tried many times to quit but wasnt sucessful until he got a really bad case of bronchitis and couldnt smoke for several days and after that happened he quit.(so go out get bronchitis, lol joking) My brother did chantrix and it was working made the cigs. taste bad but it didnt go well with his seizure meds.  He cant take patch or gum, raises blood pressure.  My mom is also a smoker and she did a combo of the patch gum and welbutrin and did really well for a year said cigs. tasted bad after that.  She started back though because ..well not sure lol  My grandma who is almost 80 quit cold turkey just to prove she could.  Is any of this helping??? I just know its hard and its good you are quitting and giving your soon to be baby a great start and I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully someone else here can be of more help.
