Should I worry or Should I not?

Hello,

I have little concern would like to ask all ladies for opinion or advice... Last tuesday 7/14 I went to see my doctor... u/s looked great.. Baby HB 158. CRL - 6.75cm. NT scan - 1.3mm, 13weeks 0 days..

The doctor requested to check on Down Syndrom.  Poked my finger to take little blood out then send to the lab... Today my doctor call and said that I have high risk of DS. If i am not mistake she said normal is 1 to 120 and mine is 1 to 108.  She wanted me to have amnio done and also do genetic conseling.. I refused and told her 'NO'. I let her know no matter what, i am going to keep the baby...

i am going to be 39 in October and I do not have DS in my family in many generation... Same as my Dh family..

I am not sure if i make a right decision not to get Amnio test.... I am feeling very peaceful when the news delivered... I don't want to be stress or freak out about this...

Any comment or advice will help...

Thank you for listening to my problem..

Its such a personal decision and only one you and your partner can make.  I believe wanting is correct in that there is more testing that is less invasive that can be done in a few weeks. I wish you well and a healthy pregnancy and baby.

I'm not certain, but I believe that there is another u/s that you can do at 19-20 weeks that is called Level II or Detailed. I believe that it can help determine if the baby has DS without the invasiveness of the amnio.

I may be wrong about it, but it's worth checking into, if you'd like to have additional information to go on!

Good luck and God Bless.

Hi, I had similar issues when I was pregnant with my son when I was 35.. I came back as a high risk although I can't remember the pecentage. I was offered a Nuchal Fold Scan at 14 weeks along with a blood test to measure the amount of HCG and PAPP-A protein in my blood..

I know you mentioned that you had a scan was this the type they offered you? I know when I had mine I was told the nuchal fold scan can identify approximately 75% of babies with DS.

I was one of the lucky ones and my scan came back with a low risk and gave birth to a healthy boy

Good luck I know how stressful it is.

Hi there - I read your helpful comment. Can I ask about the end result of your 1:89 chance?  Meaning, what happened?  Thank you.

It is completely up to you, and you must do whatever you feel is in your heart.  I am having a similar mental battle.  While my DS test was in the normal range, my trisomies test was on the LOW end of normal, and I'm 37.  So, do I do anything about the low end of normal?  do I do amnio?  Low end of normal for me is 1:364.  It's a better odd than the m/c rate of amnio, and I just can't do it.  so, today I have my mthly OB appt and will discuss high res. ultrasound or perhaps no further blood testing.  Good luck to you!

Well here is my take on it, first of all my riske was 1 in 89 and that meant that I only had a %1.12 chance of my baby having DS and I was the same as you i was keeping my baby no matter what and the chance of having a m/s after an amnio is 1 in 200 not worth it to me as i was thinking someone would have to be that ONE and i could not chance it, but it is a persoanl choice and with a good dr it can be very safe, You just have to follow your heart but realy the chance of something being wrong is less than %1 so i think you will be fine. best witshes, julia

The only reason I can see why you should get an amnio done is only if you want to make sure to better prepare yourself.  However, the one thing that I always think of when doctors have their hypothesis' is this:  When my mother was pregnant with my brother, her OB told her that he had brain damage and he would be mentally retarded, he even had the audacity to suggest that she should terminate.  My mom and dad decided that it didn't matter.  When my brother was born he was healthy, he is not retarded in any way.  All I'm saying is that doctors don't know everything and they go by numbers.  This is your baby and you love you baby no matter what!  It's in God's hands.  Congratulations again on your little miracle.

It's a hard decision to make...I can see your point of view and I'd probably do the same thing.   But on the other had if the amnio does show that that baby has DS at least you can be better prepared for the baby.   It's also you age that is the issue and makes you at higher risk of the DS, not family history.   So I wouldn't use family history as a gauge or anything.

But ultimately it's a personal decision....make a list or pros and cons...maybe that would help.   Good luck to you.
