Strange but awesome cure for congestion - sinus problems

by AshleysMom, Jan 07, 2008 10:59PM
Hi ladies:

I went to the doc today for a sinus infection, which I've had for nearly three weeks.  It has been so bad that it has actually been coming out of my eyes!  Disgusting!

Anyway, the doc told me to use a "nasal pot" vs. antibiotics.  I was skeptical, but the thing works like a charm.  Basically, it's a little ceramic tea pot -looking thing that you fill with warm water and sea salt.  You put it in one nostril, tilt your head, and the water comes out the other nostril.   I used it this am and tonight.  Feels kind of strange, but I swear I am as good as cured.

Just thought anyone suffering from preg congestion, etc. might find it useful.  Has anyone heard of this?  I've had a number of sinus infections and have never heard of it myself until now.

My Husband uses his Neti Pot and nothing else for a sinus infection. He has swore by it from the day we met. I've not had a sinus infection yet *knock on wood* but I know I will probably resort to using it too!

Glad you are feeling better!!

Did you get these through a naturopahic doc? I have  chronic sinus infections and tonsil problems and it sounds like this is worth a try.

It was just my general practitioner, who is into alternative medicince.  I bought it at a health food store. Do try it.  I'm not really into all that stuff but it really works.  Heck, you could probably just use anything with a small spout on it.  Just add about 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt (regular table salt won't work) to about a cup and a half of warm water and stir until dissolved.  Stick it in one nostril, tilt your head to one side and find the angle where it starts coming out the other nostril vs. down your throat.  Easy and doesn't hurt a bit.  I'm going to go do it right now!

Pcarsey, it was indeed called a Neti Pot.

I was an optician once and my employeer taught us to hang our heads off the side of the bed an use sterile saline (in the can for contacts).   You just squirt it in both sides and feel the salt water fill the entire sinus cavity.  When you stand up it all goes down the back of your throat.  Nasty but it always works.  It seems that the salt water also helps the tissues shrink a little so that it opens it all up.  The neti pot sounds great but if you can't find one the saline in the green & white can works also.

I use the neti pot whenever I get a cold--esp. when I'm pregnant since there's not a lot you can do.  It's really helpful to do a nasal rinse right before going to bed so you can breath.

Also, if you're around a lot of people with colds, you can do a nasal rinse as preventative medicine.
