Surprising outcome at OB/GYN today

So I had my first visit to my OB/GYN today at the 5 week mark.  He started me on prometrium (300 mg a day) until week 12, which wasn't overly surprising. What did sort of concern me is that he wants to do an u/s at 6 weeks. Now this man usually only does the first one at 8 weeks unless he is concerned about something, or at least that was the case with my last pregnancy.  I asked him why so early, and he wasn't very clear about it.  I am not spotting, only having mild cramping once in awhile, so to me everything seems normal. He basically just said it was because of my history and something about wanting to see the shape of the sac. He did say we might get lucky and get a heartbeat then, but not to be concerned if we don't.  I am a bit worried that he seems to feel the need to do an u/s so early, especially because I know he doesn't normally.  Even his nurse was surprised.  Anyone have any thoughts??  I am trying not to drive myself crazy worrying, but given my history, well I know you guys understand.  Thanks everyone, I appreciate any input.

Thats kinda ironic carp, this upcoming u/s will also be 5 weeks 6 days exactly.  Although I hope it will give me peace of mind, I guess I am worried that if we don't see a heartbeat, I will worry even more. Its sort of darned if I do, darned if I don't.  Logical me knows that you don't always get a h/b that early, but I am afraid emotional me will freak out if we don't.  Time to start listening to the advice I give everyone else I guess, although easier said than done.  Longest I have made it was 10 weeks, and never did see a h/b.  I knew in my heart that one was over long before it was confirmed.  And last time was so quick, there was no time to even let the excitment sink in, know what I mean.  This one just has to work out. I think I am going to run out and buy an HPT.  I still do them every week and it gives me a sense of well being.  Thanks for the input everyone, as always, I appreciate it.  Hugs to you all.

Well w/my history Ive had one every 2 wks......basically to keep ME calm.  I looked forward to them to know the baby was OK.  I got a HB at 5wks6days intravaginally u/s.  My next appt is next week at 11wks 2days and this is the longest Ive maintained a preg.  Im on the progestrone as well 300 mg.  And I also take baby aspirin.  So if it gets you and I a healthy baby AND a piece of mind I say......GET EXCITED MY FRIEND!!

if you have a history, that is pretty typical.  I had one at 5wk, 6wk and 8wks.

if your insurance will cover them you will usually get them.

I am sure he is only looking out for you and your baby..... He is probably going to be extra concerned for you... because of your history...... Just try not to worry so much and enjoy the thought that  you might get to hear your baby's heartbeat in a week:o)

Hugz,
Pamela

Maybe he'd like to do it for your piece of mind? Just to see right from the get go how the pregnancy is starting? Maybe it's just special attention for you? Hope that's the case :)
