Taking Prilosec OTC during Pregnancy

by tanna7, Feb 01, 2008 11:59AM
I have been taking Prilosec OTC and my Doctor prescribed Nexium. It seems to me that they are the same, with one being extremely cheaper. I am Beginning my fifth month of pregnancy and I would like to know if it is safe to continue taking prilosec otc.

My dr told me to take prilosec and told me I could take it as long as I needed. I was worried because on the box it says to only take for 14days. Dr said that is just for people who have ulcers and are taking it instead of seeing a dr about it. I have had intense cronic heartburn my entire pg.  It was so bad it would keep me up half the night and I would force myself to throw up, just trying to get any kind of relief.  It was one of the first pg symptoms I had.  For me, Prilosec is a miracle drug.  I can't imagine being pg without it.

Hey hun my name is Delma AKA..Valleybabes on here and I read your posting about taking prilosec. I actually take the same exact medication and I had to stop  3 wks ago because I was informed that wasn't a medication that was recommended for preggys, so they relplaced it prevacid which is a sister drug to prilosec, but prevacid being safer, and yeah a little more expensive. You might want to get other opinions on this also. I wish you the best!!!

Hugs, Delma

One more note on this topic....I honestly don't believe any drugs are good for a pregnant mother. Prevacid has done just what prilosec did....Relieve major heart burn.  It does the trick for me. I actually have to pay for this drug because my insurance doesn't want to cover it ...dont know why but its worth it!!!
