Update on genetic tests from my MC

by chiromom, Oct 05, 2007 03:08PM
My OB called me today and gave me the news.  My miscarriage on September 1st was due to an extra chromosome on #8.  So, there were 47 instead of 46, and it was on #8.  I didn't think of asking other questions on the phone, but read some interesting info on the internet.  It is called Trisomy 8 when there is an extra chromosome.  Unlike Downs, it is NOT associated with mother's or father's age.  It happens about .7% of spontaneous miscarriages.  A full trisomy means all the cells are effected, and will lead to MC.  If just some of the cells are effected, it will lead to what's called a mosaic, and the child will probably have developmental issues.
So. . . this to me means try, try again (in a few months).  It is great to have some answers.  Thank to you to everyone that has been there as I went through this (Perty, Tanker, Shesherm, etc. . .) Maybe I will be back on the boards after the holidays!

Take care and good luck with your ttc.. the good news is you can get pg and your mc was due to a chromosome defect instead of your body just not being able to handle it.   So your future chances are really good.  I know it doesn't always feel like good news, but my RE told me if you have been pg before your chances of getting pg again are much better than if never pg at all.

Take care.. come one back when you are ready!!

Each cell in our body normally has 46 chromosomes (2 each of #1-22 and either XX or XY).  When cells divide these chromosomes duplicate(so you will temporarily have 4 of each) and then each pair of chromosomes splits off into each of the two daughter cells.  Therefore a trisomy(when 3 chromosomes end up in one daughter cell and one in the other) can happen with any chromosome but certain ones are linked to (or happen more with) increasing age and history, like 21, 18 and 13. Others, like yours just happen by random chance. Although 21, 13 and 18 can also happen randomly (which is why even young mothers can have a down's baby.)(Sorry for the details but I am a scientist! :o))
Anyways your news is good.  Best of luck trying again!!

I'm glad you got news back, and glad to hear you can/WILL try again.  Just knowing why it happens really puts us a little more at ease, and the chance of the same thing again....well you have a better chance of winning the lottery.  Take some time off and we hope to see you here again real soon.  You will be in my thoughts and prayers  ((Sheila))

So did this extra chromosome #8 affect both babies? If so, were they identical?

chiro its good to hear from you again, im thinking that the holidays may prove to be the right time for you to get that + again.  take care of yourself, pop in and keep me informed of all the fun ttc stuff!

at least you have an answer now - that was such a huge help to us - our miscarriage was also a chromosomal issue - our baby had an extra chromosome and if he had lived he would have been born with a disorder called Klinefelters Syndrome - not very common - we are such over achievers - lol - keep us informed of what's going on with you guys - we miss you around here

so what is your little guy dressing up as for Halloween?

Thanks for the note.  I still pop up every now and then.  I just got AF the other day, something you love to get after a MC!  I go to the OB on Monday 10/15 - where he is going to tell me that there is nothing wrong with me, it was a fluke, and that I can try again after 3 AFs.  I feel "back to normal" right now.

My son is dressing up as Shaggy from Scooby Do.  My niece is going to be Daphney (sp) and my 3 year old nephew is going to be Scooby Do.  It is going to be hysterical.  My son has the long hair already - I just have to find the green shirt and I'm set!  He's such a wonderful boy - he has been great through this.  He isn't pushing for a sibling - he isn't interested in sharing any of his toys.  I think he likes all the attention he gets as an only child!

I hope you enjoyed your vacation.  We got away a few weeks ago - it was great.

So pop up more - we miss you around here!

Why is your doctor having you wait 3 cycles?  Our RE let us try again on our first one?  I know exactly how you feel about getting AF tho - it kinda seemed like the ultimate insult to me.  Hope you know, I'm here if you ever need a giggle, to vent, or just to talk.

The whole costume thing sounds really funny - you'll have to post some pics for us to see!  If you can't find a green shirt, get a white one and dye it with Rit Dye.  I think you and your hubby should go as Fred and Velma.  Complete the whole ensemble!  From all that you've said about your little guy, he sounds like a great boy!  He would almost have to be - he has a great mom!

Your so nice:)  I remember from the last MC, that he said to wait 2 cycles, or three months to let my uterus return to normal.  I need a little more time away from the MC for myself.  Five weeks of vomiting takes a while to forget.

I'm not even going to be there for Halloween, I have office hours, my parents are taking him to his cousins.  I think my brother is dressing up as Fred and my SIL as Velma.  We have the whole gang covered!  I'm sure my Dad will take a million pictures!
