WHAT antibiotics did you take for UTI?

I just came back from L&D early this AM.  I am 32 weeks with twins, and had some kind of backache I wanted to get checked out.  After testing everything, the DR told me I had a UTI (totally asymptomatic!) and prescribed FLAGYL??  I looked up the drug and only found that this drug is for things like bacterial vaginosis, c-diff, h-pylori, pelvic inflammatory disease and trichomonasis and anaerobic infections.

I thought they usually prescribed penicillan or cephalosporin.  So, what did you take if you had an UTI?

Hmmm,

Flagl is used for amoebiasis.  I actually had it prescribed for that when I was 3 months pregnant.   It is one of those drugs where the benefit has to outweigh the risk.

However, it is not usually prescribed for UTI.  THere are other drugs for that.  Definitely follow this up.

Yes!!  I rec'd the return call from the RN and she said that was unusual to prescribel that for a UTI and she is going to have that doctor call me tomorrow.  (it is a large practice)  geee......what if I never questioned her???  The nurse also said it is for BV, which I don't believe I have.  I do not have any symptoms at all.  I also bought one of those UTI tester strips and it came out negative.

Ugh! I work in a hospital and I hate to see things like this happen, but they do!

I have had chronic UTI's since childhood and was never given FLAGYL.  I usually take Cipro and Bactrim.  I have only been given Flagyl for BV.  I might double check with your doctor.  Also, was the Flagyl oral or via the vaginal gel?  I believe that the oral is contraindicated in pregnancy.
