What are the risks with low progesterone?

by alexvb, Sep 07, 2007 05:29PM
My progesterone is low, at only 12.0. My doc has me on progesterone supplements. What are the risks associated with low progesterone? My HCG levels actually increased (from 242 to 600) which I wasn't expecting (I had some bleeding/clotting probs last week). I am 5w 2d today. So, now my main concern is this low progesterone. I don't know enough about it to stop worrying... if at least I knew what it entailed I could stop obsessing somewhat! Can anyone help?

Progesterone helps with the uterine lining - making it more spongy and ready for implantation.  If your progesterone is low you could potentially miscarry but since you are on supplementation i wouldn't worry about it...especially since your hcg is doubling.  The hcg level is the most telling sign and your looks real good.

Are you on oral, suppositories or injections?  I've done some reading on this, and what I found said suppositories are the most effective and oral is the least effective.

My hcg was good but my progesterone was sinking.  It went from 20 to 16 to 11.  This was just under 6wk pg.  My RE put me on progesterone suppositories and my progesterone shot up to 39.  They have not tested it since then, but I am now 14wk3d and no long need the progesterone.

It is the progesterone that tells your body not to shed the uterine lining (or start your period).  If your progesterone drops too low, you will shed your lining and miscarry your pregnancy.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you both! It helps to know what's supposed to be going on. I'm getting another blood test on Wednesday so hopefully the suppositores will have done the trick and my progesterone will go up.
fingers crossed.

To: all
what would be the cause of the HSG levels not doubling? I have low hormones too, would that effect the HSG leve? OR is that something completely different
