early termination

I was in the ER for back pain and admitted to the hospital on 9/17.  I had informed them that I was pregnant and was due for my first appointment on the following day.  We had been trying to conceive for two years with one miscarriage last Apr so I used an ovulation test to conceive and believe we conceived around Aug 5-7th but my LMP was 7/23.  I had an ultrasound on the 19th and the ER doctor came in that evening and told me the pregnancy was blighted.   They scheduled me for a DNC the next morning and was released that same day.  I went to the hospital yesterday to pick up the MRI report and with it was the ultrasound report.  I read it and it states "A single untrauterine gestational sac is seen with an average length of 16.4 mm corresponding to a proximal gestation age of six wks duration.  A yolk sac is seen."   Then the impression section says, " Empty intrauterine gestational sac in this patient with an LMP of 7/23.  Features are suggestive of anembryonic pregnancy.  With the gestational sac, the gestational age measures six wks.  However, with the patient's LMP, the gestational age should be 8wks, 2 says and fetal pole should be seen.  Follow-up Beta HCG is suggested."   I was never given an HCG blood test.  If I am reading this correctly I think they terminated my viable pregnancy.  By my calculations if I conceived in Aug I would have only been 5-6 wks.  Please help!  I think something went really wrong.

I do not think anything is worng.  In the impressions it says it is anembryonic which means empty sac or blighted ovum.  They saw a yolk sac that was still there but they did not mention they saw a fetal pole.  It looks like the embryo was already gone but the yolk sac still visible.  In order to consider it viable they would have had to see a gestational sac, yolk sac and fetal pole all measuring within reason.  And at 8 weeks ultrasound is more accurate than HCG anyways.  I agree with the previous poster that your doctor did not terminate a viable pregnancy.  Sorry for your loss.

Because it is difficult to say when exactly a woman conceives and when an embryo implants, doctors calculate a pregnancy from the date of your last menstrual period, not the date you ovulated/conceived.  That would mean the doctor's report that on 9/19 you were at 8 weeks, 2 days was accurate, and by that time, a fetal pole and usually even a heartbeat should be seen.  (At 6 weeks, 1 day, we could see not only a fetal pole, but also a heartbeat.  We ended up losing that pregnancy in a miscarriage, so I empathize with your pain here.)  A follow-up hcg test was probably ordered just to ensure that your levels went back to a non-pregnancy level.  You can test this yourself by using a home pregnancy test; if it comes back not pregnant, your levels are probably back to normal.  If you want to be extra sure, ask your doctor to run a blood test.  Again, I'm so sorry for your loss, but I don't think your doctor terminated a viable pregnancy.

Something is wrong alright. They should give you HCG done on you. I almost have the situation But thank god my Dr kept giving me follow up for HCG test. When I went for U/S my DR could not  see the baby or the sac for 2 mos then after 4 U/S he finally saw sac but it was empty. My HCG level kept climbling and he couldn't understand.  I just about to go get DNC The last resource was another U/S he kept looking for half and hr and BAM!! there was my son. My DR thought he won a lottery when he finally saw the fetus!!! So was I . He was actually shocken over this miracle. I'm now pregnant again and I'm spotting for 6 days now I wnet to ER but they couldn't see anything. I hope I not going thru this over again but I'll be very determine not to get anything done b/c the experiment I have with my son. But this spotting is scaring me b/c I may be having MC. I would be devasted. In my opinion you should be givng HCG test every 48 or 72 hrs like I did. That was wrong.
