period after failed ivf

by justtoolate, Jul 10, 2009 02:33PM
I am 41 almost 42 and just finished my 1st IVF with no luck. I had 5 embies transfered thought I had a good chance, very disapointing... I had quite a bit of cramping during the end of my 2ww which made me think I may be preggers until I got the awful call. My question is has anyone gone through a failed IVF and continued to cramp after stopping the progesterone? It has been 4 days since I stopped the progesterone shots still getting cramping and no AF. How long does it usually take for AF to come.. any answers would be greatly appreciated.

HI there and I am sorry it didn't work out this round.  I have never personally gone through IVF, so I am afraid I can't be of much help.  However, you might want to give the fertility forum here a try.  There are probably far more women there with IVF experience.  Good luck to you!

I think your cramping is probably due to your period starting to kick in.  Four days isn't very long before starting AF - give it some more time.

BTW, I went through a failed IVF cycle (actually it got cancelled the day before retrieval) a couple of years ago so I understand a little of what you're going through.  IVF for women over 40 is very chancy - the odds aren't good but there have been successes although not as many as I would like to see.

I hope you get your AF soon - call your re's office Monday if you haven't started by then and perhaps they'll get you on Prometrium or something like that to get things going - best of luck in the future! - jen

Thank you for your comments it is nice to be able to share. I actually got AF after posting my question, I feel I can start to move on...
Jen, I was wondering if you did a donor egg cycle, I read you have a 13 month old, if so, how was your experience? I am going to wait a year or two and try on my own (i know the odds are horrible) but I feel It is not over until it is over. I will not do IVF again with my own eggs, it is too hard emotionally and financially. Thank you for your responses...Tina

My experience was wonderful - I wish I had done it sooner.  I mean, as soon as the re transplanted that embryo inside of me, he was mine - does that make sense?

I agree - IVF w/your own eggs at ages above 40 is just too hard - especially when there's little chance of success.  I know of two women in all that I've read and met that have had success w/IVF in their 40s & one of them ended up miscarrying.  I was 43 when I did my 1st cycle & I wish I hadn't wasted my time.

I have to run now but as soon as I have more time, I'll pm you and give you more details - jen

Jen,Thank you, I am sure i would feel the same way, how incredible to grow a human being inside of you regardless of DNA. I would love to hear more when you have time. Thank you so much for your caring, I am a little depressed since my IVF and the donor egg option gives me some hope...Tina

Tina, I sent you a pm - if you didn't get it, let me know.  Hopefully I answered some of your questions.  There are some other women on this forum who have done or are currently pregnant w/donor eggs - one of them is YvetteY - I'm sure she also would be glad to answer any questions - jen

Hi- I just found out on my 42 b-day this past Friday that our 4 embryos didn't make it after our first IVF cycle. I am sorry that you are probably feeling some of the things that I am, and it sounds like lots of others here, have, too. My husband and I decided to take a few days off to sort through our thoughts, and then will come up with our game plan of what next steps are. I wish you best of luck, and just wanted to say hi and that you are not alone.

I just wanted to add, I have a friend who delivered a beautiful baby boy at 42- au naturale.  No drugs or IVF

I also had a girlfriend who had IVF at 42 with 3 donor eggs.

The IVF was a success and she now has trips. (: O )  I don't think that was what she was looking for, but she is very happy!( and busy!)

Was this your first IVF?  I hear you when you say it is hard emotiionally and financially.  I am so envious of those women who get this covered in their insurance!  By the time we are finished, I could have bought a nice car.... but if you think about it, I would much rather have a little one and THAT is priceless, isn't it.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Hi Im new to this site Im 37 I just had my first round of IVF 3 embryo's put back in on 7/17/09. I went for my blood work today P-82 E-732 my numbers are good its when I go back this friday for another blood test that they drop. I did 2 IUI before this and no luck. I see your friend has trips wow that is really nice. My question to you is I feel my period coming just like the last time not bad though I was wondering if you can ask your friend if she felt that way and on what day did she find out she was pregnant is it really a 2 week wait?

by piggy2, Jul 20, 2009 06:31PM
Well, I can't ask her now because she is in Europe now.  I know that when I was pg after my 3rd IUI, I felt like my period was going to come and guess what?  I was pg afterall.  Unfortunately, it did not last, but I still had that feeling.  Good Luck!
