pregnancy, age and hypothyroidism

Hi!  I'm 36 years old, I have Hypothyroidism and my fiance and I would love to have a child together. I have 2 grown children already with my ex-husband, (they are 16 & 18 years old,  yes, I started young!) and they were both healthy, normal pregnancies. At the age of 36 with this particular medical problem, what are my chances of actually being able to get pregnant and what would the risks be? I have asked my dr and all he can say is go for it, you shouldnt have a problem but I have read on line and in books that with my age and health the chances of actually becoming pregnant are slim to none.  any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi lee1472,  I am on Levothyroxine as well and on a prenatal vitamin.  I take the thyroid meds in the morning and the prenatal vitamin around dinner time.  My doctor told me to take them separately because the effects of the Levothyroxine can be overshadowed by the prenatal viatamin.  Of course the best choice would be to ask your doctor about this to confirm.  My husband and I are also trying to conceive.  Lots of baby dust to you!

I am 39 yrs old and trying to get pregnant.  I just had blood work confirm that my TCH is too high at 10.95.  I have been managing Hypothyroid for years; however, I have not always been great about taking my meds properly but am MUCH better now.  I have two questions?

I am on 112mg of Levothyroxine, which is a generic pill.  Should I ask my doctor to prescribe Armour or even synthroid?  Also-I recently read that you should not take the Levothyroxine with products containing calcium, Iron or calcium.  My pre-natal vitamin contains all of these of these which I was taking at the same time as my thyroid medicine.  Does anyone know if this will throw off my results as well?  Thank you.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 11 years ago and have been taking Synthroid ever since. I am 38 now and 32 weeks pregnant. I did have some fertility issues, however, this pregnancy was conceived naturally.

I was undiagnosed hyperthyroid when I got pregnant with my eldest (who is now 21). I was diagnosed hypothyroid in 2001. I am 38 weeks 5 days pregnant now at age 41 and had no difficulty getting pregnant.

Definitely make sure your thyroid issue is being treated. Thyroid issues CAN cause fertility issues but mostly if they aren't being treated.

I've been hypothyroid since my 20s.  It's been managed by medication.  I have a 20 month old son and am 14 weeks pregnant at age 43.  I am being followed by an endocrinologist this time around.  FYI, it was a natural cycle.

Are you taking the thyroid hormone to balance your condition. Better than synthetics ask Dr for ARMOUR Thyroid. They don't like to because insurance doesn't like pay for it, but it is the best for both the T3 and T4. Synthetics do a poor job make the blood look good but you still feel "off". Switched to real thyroid (Armour) and I had no problem carrying pregnancies. Did miscarry 3 times with out it while using synthetic thyroid.
Just my two cents and experience. Mine is hypothyroidism...some call it sluggish thyroid.

Hello,

as long as your thryoid is properly treated and you are taking thyroid meds then there is no reason that you can't have a normal and healthy pregnancy.

I am now pregnant with my second!

Yes,  I am nearly 38, have hypothyroid and am 4 1/2 months pregnant with my first.  I had no trouble getting pregnant. Important thing is to control the thyroid levels and check and adjust thyroid meds.

I have Hashimotos too and I am 8 months pregnant now. From what my endocrinologist tells me being hypothyroid shouldn't affect your ability to conceive if it is well controlled but if your TSH level is high then you are at risk of miscarriage and also the baby could be at risk of developmental problems. She told me that while trying to conceive my TSH should be below 2.0 and once you become pregnant it is important to have your TSH checked as soon as you find out as your body will need more thyroid hormone and so you would need to have your medication dose increased ... do you take synthroid at the moment?

I hope this helps, good luck!

I have the same thing and I go to an endocrinologist, they are more up to date on that condition and you have to be watched closely if you do become pregnant, I am now 5 weeks prego and have to have my blood drawn every 4-6weeks.. You should go have your blood drawn by the endo, tell them what you are planning and they will watch you better than your ob or family doc.  My OB hasn't said one word about my thyroid and it really irritates me,  that's why I took it into my own hands!! good luck!!

I also have Hashimotos, which also makes the hypothyroidism worse
