I really don't know, although I've never heard of this happening.  I have heard of women not gaining until their second trimester.  It seems like you should be gaining weight not losing.  I would call your doc or midwife and at least ask them the question over the phone.

I would definitely see your dr soon. Some weight loss is common in early pg but, at 17w +, you should not be seeing a loss, let alone 17lbs. That is 17lbs in 5wks.

hiya thanks for the replys. i can see the doctor but it would ahve to be as an emergency apointment tomorow, otherwise i have to wait. does this class as an emergency?

I would be alarmed by such a weight loss, I would definitely try to call and speak to a nurse to let them know.  They would probably want to see you immediately.

I would say YES YES YES.. its not really normal, so to me anything abnormal would be considered an emergency appt. Do you feel the baby moving at all.. I lost 13 pounds the first trimester of mine,, I was soo sick, then total gained 23 pounds for the nine months, so I really had text book weight gain..

hiya, got in touch with midwife today, she didnt seem that bothered! i think im more bothered now because shes not at all bothered! she said it was common to loose weight due to morning sickness thoughout the first trimester. i explained i didnt start loosing weight till i got to 12 weeks and ive had no morning sickness whatsoever, and she just seemed to fob it off and say it was ok to loose weight blah blah blah, so im really not happy! also i was thinking. i have lost 17pound, but i must shurely have put some on due to pregnancy weight, so my overall weightloss may be more, if this makes sense.
basicly she didnt seem bothered, so im going to se how it goes over the weekend and if i dont put any on, im going to the maternity emergency dept at the hospital.
i have heard the h/b most day, i bought a home doppler due to 3 previous m/c within 12 months before i fell pg with this one, and fel i needed the reasureance, so i know baby is still beating away! and my u/s at 11w was fine and good.

could it be that you logged your weight incorrectly?  I just don't see how you would lose 17# in 5wks without dieting and exercise.  That would be hard for a person trying to lose weight in a normal situation.  Are you an exerciseholic?  You said you were eating good and plenty, so I just don't understand it.  I'm glad that you still hear the heartbeat, that makes me feel better.  Maybe you have a disorder causing the weight loss (hyperthyroidism)?  Of course I don't wish that on you, I'm just grasping at straws.  So basically, you did not get an earlier appointment than the appt you have in 3wks?  Can you call and talk to your ob's nurse?

I too have been in your shoes with all 4 of my pregnancies except this one so go figure...lol but anyway I understand your concern but don't worry about it because I ate what I was supposed to and still lost weight to the point where when I was pregnant with my 3rd child the doctor was new to me and asked me if I was dieting and I said no and explained to him that I had always lost weight during my pregnancies despite eating regularly and he actually called me a liar!!(HOW RUDE!) and all of my babies have been healthy and normal weights...so enjoy your pregnancy and don't worry.

I hate to sound silly - but have you checked your scales or weighed yourself on a second set?  I had myself worried sick because I thought I had lost weight and the weight loss was caused because my scales were off - sounds simple - but I missed it at first - do you exercise a lot?  that can cause some loss - the other thing that my doctor told me was this - I started out overweight - I'm trying hard to eat healthier now and to exercise some minimal control over portion control - trying not to buy into the whole eating for two thing - she said that can cause some overweight people to lose a couple of pounds - as long as there is a gradual increase over time - life is good - talk to your doctor - try to get in and get the baby checked out - and hardest of all - try not to worry
