I am 36  and I am26 weeks pregnant, my baby was diagnosed with spina bifida. The dr. seen his thru the ultra sound and it was confirmed thru an aminio. They r still researching the cause of this birth defect. Some seem to think that the mother lacks folic acid in her system and other dr s has said that the cause has not been determined. So don't blame yoursel because if u think like I think u will love urchild regardledd

Do some research online. I really don't think your age has anything to do with it. They really shouldnt try to make you feel guilty like that. Spina  bifita  I think just happens and can happen to anyone. Ask to be sent  to see a fetal specialist and I'm sure they will anwser all your questions. Good luck to you and your little one.

Well, I will be honest, I have never heard of older moms being at higher risk of SB.  That certainly doesn't mean that isn't the case, it's just new to me.  As far as I know, the risk level for nural tube defects is pretty consistent regardless of age.

I think you need to speak to your Dr.  As far as I know the only way to absolutely diagnose SB in utero is through amnio.  They can test the amniotic fluid and give you a diagnosis.  Your bloodwork probably showed an elevated level of AFP.  This is only a possible indicator of SB, but it cannot absolutely diagnose.  Your options truly are only amnio or at birth.  Do have a conversation with your Dr., that is the best thing to do.

All the best to you.
