try and try and try again.  some quite cold turkey, some wean themselves off.  maybe when you want to reach for a cig you find another thing to keep yourself busy.  there are sites you can find for support. it sounds like you know the risks, you just have to now find a way to make it work for you.  but back to start maybe.  then give yourself a deadline when it finally goes to 0 cigs. i quit cold turkey, it was hard.

I quit cold turkey with my new pregnancy. Boy it's hard with the flaring hormones, tempers, etc. I just made the choice. I'm not going to preach because I did not quit totally w/my dd, but decided to with this one. It's mostly habit, on the phone, w/coffee yada yada, but, every day it gets easier, lots of water and lots of deep, deep breaths. I am fine now, thank goodness.. With the risk of SIDS & Age as a factor, it's your choice and just remember that.....

i agree with the habit thing.  change your habits of when you smoke.  i used to smoke a long time ago and quit cold turkey.  it was hard at first.  i used to always smoke in my car.  i started to not bring them in the car and i loved to have a glass of wine and smoke while on the phone.  i cut out the glass of wine and the phone call.  i started getting outside more and when the urge came up i just busied myself w/ something else.  for me cleaning always takes my mind off of things.  get outside and breathe fresh air....call someone for a extra help to talk you out of it...look for healthier habits...i know its hard but you can do it..:)

I went with cold turkey too. I found out on a Friday that I was pg, finished the pack I was on that Sunday and haven't had one since. It's not easy, but once you get past the first few days it's not bad at all.

be sure to check with your DR if you are having alot of stress about quitting and have smoked for a long time my sister's DR told her it was actually less stressful for the baby if she just cut back...I'm by no means saying keep smoking I hope I would be able to quit cold turkey and constantly gave my sister a hard time and still do...but if it is really stressing you out talk to your DR.  good luck

I am going through the same thing right now. It's hard especially if you do stressed or thinking about a lot. My husband is in Iraq we have been apart for almost 21/2 years becasue of deployments. both he and I are in the army. we were only together long enough this time for me to get preganant. now I am alone prepareing for a the beautiful little person to enter our lives and it's alot. for me to just quit cold turkey isnt as easy as it sound and I get upset when people make me feel worse for doing it especially when it's someone who has no idea where you are and what you are going through. I want to quit but how can I when work puts me on edge and my husband is so far away and Im all alone????  I really need help and a better plan.

oh wow... Its monday again??? (wink wink)

a lot is at factor here.. I believe shesherm is right... You dont want to quit cold turkey and put your body into stress like that. atleast not concidering all factors. I would talk with your ob and see what they say.

I smoked with my dd thru out the whole 9 months and quit as soon as she was born. I was just stupid and didnt know anybetter. My dh was station in korea for a year at that time, moved to a new state, and was building our new home, not to mention full tiime job. She is in perfect health this day.
Thank goodness!

keep from a long story.. I would talk with your ob and maybe start a program that will help you gradually quit... Good luck... I know how hard it is to do it.!!! Your already at a good start... Just asking and trying is the key. being aware of what your doing and one day it will be there for you.

Congratulations on your prego... and I wish you the best of luck quitting. Hang in there.

Hi,

I am living in Philippines (though i am Australian).

I was also smoking up until I was pregnant.  When i found I was pregnant I wanted to just quit, but it wasn't quite that easy.  Took me a few weeks to stop completely, and did have just a couple after that time and none for the past months.  The best thing for me was distraction... do something else....

Now my taste has changed and i can't stand the smell.

Don't beat yourself up over this..... just start each day fresh and see if you can cut down if you can't stop completely.  Focus on other things you can do to stay healthy as well, like eating well, getting some exercise etc.

Best wishes

Sally

Yes, that is true.  Things can go wrong, babies are sometimes born sick.  There is also the argument that many of our mothers smoked during pregnancy and we are fine.  The reason to quit is the same reason we now know to put our babies and small children in car seats, or why we have our children wear helmets while biking, why we don't drink anymore during pregnancy....we now know better.  I too was a smoker for many many years, and I still crave them.  I quite when my husband and I decided to try to get pregnant and I know that if I smoke during a pregnancy my baby could (not for sure, but could) be born low birth weight, have a higher chance of SIDS, higher chance of asthma, etc etc.  Its not worth it.  I know how hard it is to quit, so I have decided that  when I have a viable pregnancy, I am going to take the money I would have spent on cigarettes and put in in a college fund for my child.  Doing something like that will help remind me when the "urge" hits.    I hope you decide to quit, and wish you well with your pregnancy.

Hi there. I went onto NRT and got patches when I found out I was pregnant. I had the occasional fag  but then at 14 weeks; I had some bleeding which stressed me out and I started smoking again!  Im now nearly 17 weeks and trying to give up again! It is really hard! Back on the patches and trying to think of baby instead of smoking.  My partner is an ex smoker (gave up 3 years ago) and is doing my head in about giving up! I smoked with my first pregnancy and my little girl came early and had a birth weight of 4lb 13oz. I also suffered badly with high blood pressure and do not want to go down that road again! Good luck all! xx

It's not a problem being "underage" here..lol.  However, this is a post from 2007, so it is rather old.  Good for you for trying to quit smoking.  As a former smoker myself I know how hard it is...just keep at it and you'll do it.  I was very very addicted, so if I can you can too!!!  Good luck to you!

I am in the same boat and get very depressed about it. I think every day that I am trying hard but it's just not good enough. It blows my mind that I just can't stop. but it is so hard. I hope one day i will wake up and just not want to anymore.

Smoking is an addiction.  And a powerful one.  If you are having trouble quitting, talk to your Dr.  There are aids and also support groups, etc.  You can do this!!
