12 week downs/ blood work results

i called my ob/gyn today to get my blood work results.  It was 1 in 6,200.  which is great, much much better than I expected.

then she said, my age risk is 1 in 170.  so then of course i panicked, and asked what that meant, and she said, i had nothing to worry about, that that was just because I'm 36 years old, and  that the 1/ 6,200 was the important one and that those numbers were great.
so i'm not having an amnio done. (I'm 14 weeks today.)

Are amnio tests common for women of "advanced maternal age"? One hasn't even been mentioned to me. I think my doctor only does them if absolutely necessary.

my reg. obgyn referred me to the parinatologist for the amnio, i assumed it was an amnio, i didn't know it was mandatory to get the bloodwork done first, or that you had to wait till 14-16 weeks for the amnio.

Oh, it doesn't take two months for the amnio results.  But if I had the nuchal test at 12 weeks, it would be like 18 weeks until the full amnio results are completed (OK, I'm no mathemeticion or spelling bee contestant for that matter either).

So you signed up for an amnio and your doc did the bloodwork?  Did you have a choice?  12 weeks is too early for an amnio...

Congratulations!!!, My numbers were high as well which is why I decided against the amnio as well (plus the risk wasn't worth it to me).  I'm currently 17 weeks and 2 days, yeppie, I can't wait to really start feeling the movements.  Baby's daddy, tells me he feels it while I'm sleepin all the time, I think the baby is playin games with me but had a  dr. appt. last week and the heart beat was really strong and not only that the baby was moving and she was chasing him/her around to listen to it as well, too funny, I have a jokester on my hands:)  I'm due 5-7-08, first time mommy, I'll be 36 when my bundle gets here

That's great!

I kind of wish I had done that test.  I opted to go straight for the amnio.  For me, if the results were bad, I would have panicked for two months while waiting for the amnio results.  If they were good, I would have had the amnio  anyway (I think.  DH is pretty adamant).

Man, this stuff is stressful!

Yay!!!! Good news.
I can never remember how far along I am (silly) so if you're 14, then I must be 15.1 weeks today. You're my calendar!!!

Interesting . . . I'm really not sure about a cut off time for that test. My doctor's office did said there was a range they like to do the test during, I think they said during 13-14 weeks. The ultrasound technician did say that due date was very important to note for more accurate test results though.

Did they really do your test at 14w1d? I thought the cut off was 13w 6d?

Congratulations!  That's great news!  I was in yesterday for the nuchal translucency ultrasound test, however my blood lab results won't be ready until next week. I'm praying my numbers come back great too!  (14w2d)
