12 weeks of cold sores

Hi!  A few years ago I became very ill, during that time I developed cold sores.  Since then I get one at most two cold sores by my nose a year.  I am now 14 weeks pregnant and pretty much then entire time I have had a horrible cough then about two weeks later I got a cold sore.  I didn't think much of it, but here we are weeks later and I have had at least 6!  I have had a cold sore every single day in some stage of healing for weeks!  I told the maternity care specialist at my appointment.   But, they are more concerned with my high bp and age (37), which makes sense.  But, the cough and constant cold sores seems very odd to me.  Anyone else experience this?  Thanks!

Valtrex, in your last trimester especially, can help to supress HSV which will be contagious to your newborn.

Thanks everyone! I have been using Abreva, which seems to clear them up faster.   But of course it doesn't prevent them.  I will ask my dr. about lysine and Valtrex.   It can't hurt to add some pre and probiotics.  I will try just about anything at this point.   I am glad it seems rather common.

I use topical Abreva that is sold over the counter. Fortunately I've only had one cold sore so far. Hopefully you can get yours to clear up!

Hit enter too soon. It can cause your partner to get Type 2 herpes.

You are more prone to cold sores when you are pregnant due to your weakened immune system. I would def talk to your doctor about the Valtrex . Also, make sure that you don't give oral sex while you have one , because it can cause Type 2 herpes.

Ask your doctor about a rx called valtrex. You can take it daily to prevent cold sores and also just when they break out as well. Safe to use while pregnancy, per my doc. It's safer to be cold sore free than to pass the virus to your baby.

May I also suggest campho-phanique.  I get cold sores all the time. I have a tube of that stuff around all ye time.  The second I feel one coming on I coat my lips in that stuff and it helps it from getting huge or even stops it half the time to developing into a full sore.

Yeah. Try lysine and Tylenol. Take 1000 mg 3 x  a day till gone. They are horse pills, but they work. They are not vitamins; they are amino acids that you can get over the counter at the drug store.

I suffer from cold sores too an had one early in my pregnancy. When I feel one coming and while its there I take lysine its a vitamin. It will help it clear up faster. I had researched it an read to take half the recommended dose but others say all is fine....just thought I would throw that option out there.

Yep! I'm 18 weeks and no joke the whole time I've had cold sores its very frustrating. I've been using Berts bees even in my nose and it helps a lot, I don't have that bad cough but my sinuses are bad Berts helps with this also. I hope all subsides soon.

If you don't already take one, add a prebiotic to your diet. You can do it with a pill or with yogurt containing live, active cultures.
