46 and might be pregnant

I am 46 years old and will be 47 in a couple of months.  I am married 4 years and this is the first time for both of us.  We have no children and would dearly love to have one.  When we first got married my husband thought that if it happened then it did but we both needed some time as a couple.  At Christmas, we both discussed this and decided in late december we would watch and see when would be a good time to get pregnant.  Is it possible to know before your cycle is due to start that you are pregnant - this week I am so tired and am having different feelings in my body....and just feel like I could be pregnant.  I am not sure if this is hopeful thinking or if it is true.  I am going nuts with thinking about it and I feel stupid for asking questions but do not know where to go and who to ask.......as our friends think we are nuts at our age to start a family.
Is there a home pregnancy test that you can take before you miss your period that is accurate - my period is due in the next week but am going crazy with thinking about it....

thanks for listening

Oh my, Paradise54! I am very excited and happy for you. I can't wait to see what happens! I just wanted to say that you should not listen to those who think you should not start a family at 46. After all, 40 is the new 30, and you deserve to follow your dreams just like the people who are saying you shouldn't did when they had children.
One of my best friends had a gorgeous baby girl "Maisie" after 40 and she Is perfect. My friend had fertility issues and had a son who was 7 at the time. The only thing she said is her energy level isn't what it used to be but wouldn't change a thing. Everything was fine with the pregnancy and birth.
I wish you all the luck in the world and don't let the opinions of others get you down. I believe people who wait to have children are some of the best parents out there! Take care of yourself and please let us know what happens. We are rooting for you!

I used a blue cross, pink line, dollar one.
I've found it very very good. And it has been correct every time.

In very early pregnancy, it can look negative (or so faint you think your eyes are playing games) while wet.  But once dry the pink of the test line will form into a very thin line.  This is still positive.

Go get a few dollar tests and do one each day first thing in the morning for the next few days.

It is possible (though not very likely) to get pregnant at 46.  While there's still regular periods there's still chance of pregnancy.

Best wishes. let us know how you go.

Sorry, just have to chime in again here.  The only issue I have with the clearblue is all of those blue dye tests can tend to show really dark evaporation lines.  I have a couple of pics posted where you would swear they are positive, but are negative.  Just my opinion, but I find the pink dye tests to be better then the blue dye.  I just had to say that because getting what I swore was positive only to find it negative broke my heart.  ClearBlue Digital is good though.

Hi there.  Yes, there are some really good early home pregnancy tests on the market.  In my opinion, the best one is the First Response Early Detection.  They can be a bit pricey..I'm in Canada and they are about $10 each.  However, I swear by them.  They can be used about 5 days prior to your period being due.

Here is the thing though...the reason they pick up earlier then many is because they detect HCG (the hormone your body only produces when it is pregnant) at a much lower level then other tests.  What you need to remember is that in order for HCG to appear in your urine, implantation must first take place.  This can happen anywhere from 3 to 10 days (thats the average) from fertilization.  After that, HCG first appears in the blood, then the urine.  So levels early on can really vary from women to women and pregnancy to pregnancy.  The range is huge.  My point is that even if it comes back negative, it doesn't mean you are not pregnant.  So they are good, but definately not 100% accurate when used early.  Nothing is really.  If you are going to give it a try though, make sure you use first morning urine so that it is it's most concentrated, and be careful to read the test within the allotted time (I think it's 10 minutes).  After the 10 minutes, they do have a tendancy to form evaporation lines which can be mistaken for a positive.

In all honesty, the best way to get an accurate result, even with the early tests is to wait until the first day you missed your period.  You can also ask your Dr. for a blood test as HCG does show in the blood much sooner then the urine.  Most times blood tests are pretty accurate about 5 days prior to a missed period.

Good luck to you, and welcome!!
