6 weeks today -- starting spotting/bleeding

I'm not sure what to think...I went for my first u/s on Friday and they saw the pregnancy sac and it was measuring about 5.5 weeks, just where it was supposed to be.  They were not able to see anything in the sac, but said that was normal given how early I am.  They want me go back on Friday as I will be 6.5 weeks and they expect to see  the heartbeat.  My hcg levels are continuing to double/triple, so everything appears to be fine.  Saturday late afternoon I began spotting.  Nothing in my underwear, just when I wipe.  The blood was brownish.  Not to be too graphic, but I inserted some tp inside me, to see if I had a real bleed starting and the tp had some red blood and a very tiny clot on it.  The brown spotting has continued into this morning, again, only when I wipe do I see anything.  I have a call into my doctor's office and I'm just waiting to hear from them this morning.  Is any of this normal?  Could the u/s have caused me to bleed?  I feel a little crampy, but no more than I have been feeling all along.  I have no idea what to think.  Any insight would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

I'm totally at a loss for words right now.  The doctors office just called and told me that my #'s have dropped from 2679 (on Friday, 10/10) to 420 as of today.  I am in complete shock right now.  I was just there on Friday and everything was fine and I was scheduled to go in for an u/s this Friday to find the heartbeat (that would put me at 6.5 weeks).  How could this have happened??  Can your #'s drop that drastically in a few days?  I am honestly thinking they messed up in the lab and I have someone else's #'s.  I'm not in denial...but I find it hard to believe that my #'s would drop so much, so quickly.  Is this possible?  Grant it, I did start spotting on Saturday, but only brownish blood when I wiped.  Not red, no clots and not heavy at all.  Does any of this sound right?

I have been spotting for the past week...very light though.  I still have extremely sore bb's and I get quesy off and on throughout the day...After 4 m/c's I have learned not to get upset and to try to relax and remain calm...hang in there and let us know how the tests go!

My spotting has almost stopped, sometimes I don't even see it when I wipe now, thank God!  Being my first pregnancy, I just don't know what to expect and what can be "normal".  I felt like I was going to get my period all day yesterday...thankfully today I feel so much better all around.  I went for blood work this morning.  They will call me this afternoon to let me know what my #'s are diong....hopefully rising!  I appreciate everyone's comments, as it's nice to hear that these things happen to other people too.  Thanks!

I agree with what the others have said - very normal to spot during first trimester.  I spotted brown for about a week when I was 5 weeks and then had one day of bright red blood in the toilet accompanied by cramps at 7 weeks.  Nothing since and I'm 26 weeks now.  A technician told me that she continued to have her period throughout her pregnancy.  Congratulations and best of luck to you!

Your cervex is very sensitive during pregnancy and bleeds easily.  U/s can definitely cause some spotting.

Congratulations to you too!  I wish they would have told me that it was possibly that I could begin to spot due to the internal u/s on Friday, so I wouldn't be so alarmed.  I'm still spotting today, very lightly though, sometimes I don't even see it on the tp.  I did put some tp inside me and there was more brown blood on the tp...but no red and no pink...so I guess I will try to relax.  If I were to miscarry, I'd image that it would have been a much heavier bleed than what I experienced over the weekend....right?  I might go get my levels tested on Wed, just to ease my mind.  I don't want to find out on Friday that they can't find the sac....that would be completely devasting!  I feel like I need to be somewhat prepared.  I'm so nervous they may tell me it's an empty sac on Friday too.  So many things to worry about...but in the meantime, I am thinking positive and we are certainly hoping for GREAT news on Friday.  Are you having any symptoms at 5 weeks?  I was 6 weeks yesterday and besides being tired (which I think is due to all the stress and not sleeping well) and sore breasts....I haven't felt sick or anything.  I'm curious to know if you are...even though I know everyone is different.  Thanks!

I had an internal ultrasound done on Thursday....and I have been spotting as well.  I actually began spotting a few days prior to the u/s, but the u/s looked good (I am 5 weeks).  Try not to worry....it probably really isn't anything to worry about.  Congratulations!

Thanks for repsonding to my post.  It's comforting to hear that this can be normal.  Being 42 and this being our 4th IVF attempt...I am just so nervous about everything, especially since my hcg levels started off so low and they were very concerned about that.  Thankfully they caught right up and I'm where I need to be.  As the day has gone on, the spotting seems to be slowing, but it's still there when I wipe, but not as much as yesterday afternoon.  I did have a transvaginal u/s yesterday and it was almost exactly 24 hours after that appt. when I began spotting.  My doctor called me back and did not seem too concerned since my appt on Friday looked fine, my levels were fine and the blood was brown and not red.  They reassured me that this is normal, but if it gets worse to call them back and I can have my hcg levels tested again to make sure they are not  going down.  Otherwise, they said to wait until Friday and hopefully we will see the heartbeat and all will be good.  Thanks again for responding. :)

First off, congrats on your pregnancy!!

So many women will spot and some even outright bleed during first trimester.  The majority of the time it has no negative effect.  It can be caused by irritating the cervix, which is very soft right now, so if you had a transvaginal ultrasound, or an internal exam or even sex can cause it.  Sometimes it happens and they just don't know why.  Mild cramping is also  often considered normal.  Any bleeding and cramping should be reported to your Dr., so its good you called, but usually its nothing to worry about.  Try to relax (I know, easier said then done) and I am sure all will be just fine.  Your next ultrasound will give you the peace of mind you need I am sure.

All the best to you, and congrats again!!
