Am I miscarrying?

Hi.  I am 7 weeks and 2 days- my first pregnancy.  2 nights ago I started very light brown spotting- I only knew when I wiped myself.  Yesterday I had an internal scan and the heart was still beating.  Doctor told me to take it easy and see what happens.  Since the bleeding has become red (no tissue or matter) but still not much- I wouldn't have even soaked through a pad in 24 hours.  I do, however, have fairly painful cramps and a sore lower back.  Has anyone managed a successful pregnancy after having such symptoms?  If so, any advice?  Or...  if it sounds like I'm going to miscarry, can you advise me what to expect and if there is anything I should be doing?  Thanks

Thanks for the advice AnnieBrooke.  I have everything crossed and am doing everything I can- resting and liquids.  Have been passing some menstrual like tissue in the last 24 hours and the bleeding is a bit heavier.  Got everything crossed....

Just because you're bleeding it does not mean a miscarriage is inevitable, especially if the fetal heartbeat is still seen.  Did the doctor see anything else besides the embryo, such as loose blood in the uterine cavity?  When I bled in early pregnancy, the doc told me to go home, lie down and only get up to go potty, and to drink lots of liquids.  I was to stay in bed until 24 hours after the bleeding stopped.  The rest (not walking) and the hydration apparently calm the uterus if it is contracting -- they don't stop a miscarriage if that is what is happening, but they stop uterine contractions that might be aggravating something like a broken blood vessel in the uterus.
