Anemia in late pregnancy

I am 38 and currently 38 wks 3 days pregnant.  About two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with moderate anemia and told to start taking an iron supplement and up my intake of iron rich foods.  I have done both, but I am still getting very lightheaded and dizzy and tire really easily.  I  have been reading that some of the risk of anemia can included blood transfusions and even still birth.  I am kinda freaking out.  Anybody been through this?  Can you give me some encouragement or pointers to get through?

My sister was 40 when she had her baby and was also anemic. She too took iron pills. So as a public service notice, I wanted to remind you to eat a LOT of vegetables &/or drink prune juice because iron can make you constipated.

Sending happy thoughts your way...

Yes, I've had low iron levels during both my pregnancies.  I had to take 2 Feosol iron tablets 65mg each, and it brought my levels up.  This is pretty common during pregnancy, remember, your sharing your blood supply with your baby.  Be mindful to eat iron rich foods now.  Blackstrap molasses is excellent, liver, spinach, kiwi.  If you have a cast iron skillet, cook your food in it, the iron from the skillet cooks into the food.  Best wishes to you!

I think you should tell your doc that the iron doesn't seem to be having enough of an effect.  They might be able to figure out how to get more iron into you.  The other thing is, lightheadedness and tiring is pretty common at 38 weeks whether you are anemic or not.  It might be that only delivery can change it.
