BFP at 44 but lines are getting more faint

Hi all!

I haven't posted since I had a chemical in April 2010. That was a sad time for me as I lost my little bean on my birthday BUT it was two fingers to the Ob who told me I was entering the menopause and could never conceive.

Anyway, I'd given up all hope of ever having a baby due to high FSH and age. DH and I had 'birthday sex' on the 4th May. Life carried on as usual but last week I went home from work with what I thought was a tummy bug, nausea, hot and cold flashes and intermittent runny botty, (Soz tmi). I did wonder if it was tAnyway, I thought OK, maybe im starting the big M, (I was mainly concentrating on the hot and cold flashes).

To cut a long story short, I thought, I wonder?  I peed on an OPK that i had stashed away, it came back super strong, this was 1 day before my cycle was due. I've read that OPK's can be an indicator for pregnancy, so I went and bought a pack of Lloyds pharmacy pregnancy tests. It came up with a definite + tive. I didn't get too excited because of all of the above, this was last Tuesday. I bought a Sainsburys own brand the next afternoon, positive, then on Thursday a 2 pack of FRER, one negative, one v v v faint positive. Saturday I took a lloyds again, negative, this morning, v v v faint positive. I think I may be having another chemical, I just wanted to know your experience if at all. I'm guessing as my cycles can be 2-3 days different, but if I average it out to a 23 day cycle, I'm 7 days late. Hot flashes are dying down, I'm having cramps as if AF is coming, but hardly any today.  What do you think?

hopefully things will go well, although I had sort of waht your describing last november, I unexpectedly found out I was pregnant, then did a few tests and around a week after I originally found out the tests wernt getting any darker, still quite light and I ended up by having a blighted ovum, I'm already on those suppliments that I've mentioned and am going to get a script for dhea this friday as the specialist I saw said that was my best bet to get that last golden egg :)

when you do your tests you should be doing them in the morning with first morning wee, that way you will have the same amount of stored up wee and the tests should come back relatively the same, if your doing some in the morning and some in the afternoon, that may explain the negitives you have got as your wee wont contain as much of the hcg, but hopefully if your going to your doctor you will find out either way

Thanks for your honesty Adgal. I'm still trying to get my head around this. I admit I've taken so many tests (I know, POAS freak) anyway, I've listed below brands I've used. I think apart from Sunday when I only used one stick, I've had negatives and positive results on the same day if that makes senses?

Sainsburys own brand 2 positive 1 negative (including a stronger line this lunchtime)
FRER, definite positive line although thin, one negative
Sainsburys red dye cheapy, (can't remember it's name) positive
Tescos own brand, positive and negative

Sooo apart from one day with absolute negative using one test, I've had positives and negatives on tests with I think a days gap from not testing since last Tuesday. I'm going to see my GP tomorrow, hopefully bloodworm will give me a definitive answer. I'll keep you posted

It does sound like a possible chemical - I'm sorry.

There are two different possibilites that come to mind with the negative/positive tests.  I am pretty disappointed with the "new and improved" FRER as they almost always seem to have a very faint second line.  When I called FRER they admitted this is a ghost line, and it is more apparent in the new tests then the old style.  If you are using any of the blue dye brands, ghost lines come up all the time, and often have color.  I refer to them as false positives even though the manufacturers won't admit that.  I have a few examples of negatives posted in my pics.  They absolutely look positive.

The other possibility is a result of many of these tests becoming so sensitive.  You can buy a pack of tests and have two tests in the same pack pick up at different levels.  So if your levels are extremely low, you can get a very faint positive on one test, followed by a negative on another (and that is from the same package!).  If you are using different brands, then you can also get a positive followed by a negative with another brand.  FRER picks up at crazy low levels.  ClearBlue is a bit higher, etc.

I think I would see the Dr. at this point.  Get him to run a beta for you and see what the heck is going on.  I have a pretty good idea as to what your going through right now, and it's so hard.  I'm sorry this is like this for you right now, and I am thinking of you.

Thanks Ecologic

You've confirmed my fears  :-(  I just wish the witch would hurry up and show her ugly face so that i can get on with things. I would have thought that AF would have shown her ugly face by now.  Also, because of the hot flashes, i've been taking my temp which has been in the high 97's and low 98's.  As i havent been charting, i dont know how significant this is.  I mau POAS this one last time, if negative i shall go to my GP tomorrow and get them to do blood work

Thank you so much for responding

thanks Stacey

i have been taking DHEA and Agnus Cactus plus women's health supplements as standard.  I'm not actively trying (although it would be great if i was as I had given up hope).  I did wonder if the DHEA had allowed me to produce that one good egg hence me entertaining the idea that i may be pregnant.  Still no sign of the witch as yet, this makes me a good 7 - 10 days late which is the longest i've ever gone.

Yes it sounds like a chemical pregnancy :-(

I would go get a 48 hours HCG test: best way to tell you what's really going on.

Good luck!

I'm going to say that I am probably leaning towards the same feeling as you are, but if you do want to get pregnant there are a number of things you can do to help with egg health etc, first off I would have acupuncture done, you will need at least 3 cycles, also natrural suppliments to take would be spirulina or vital greens, coq10, fish oil, royal jelly and maca Lárginine can also be taken (as long as you dont have cold sores) and you could also look into dhea as well, all of these suppliments will need to be taken for at least 3 months :)
