Cerebral Pareses

Hi

I'm just 5 weeks pregnant.

My partner got from his previous relationship a kid with cerebral Pareses. That caused brain damage. It is unknown if this happen during the pregnancy, delivery or the very first days. The kid is now 8 and has difficulties to walk and some slower brain development.

I am trying to figure out a couple of things since I am a bit scared:

1.- its this something that could happen to us?
2.- if so, any way I can detect it during pregnancy?
3.- what are the causes?

Thanks

Maria

Cerebral Palsy is rarely hereditary.  I's more often caused my complication during pregnancy such as illness in mother, or incidents during or after birth as in low oxygen supply. As long as you do everything you can to stay healthy, and you give birth at a reputable location there's no reason to believe your child will have it, but I would discuss this in further detail with your Dr. so they can watch for it.
