Cytotec/Misoprostol

Hi,  Just wondering if anyone has used the above medication to help expel remaining tissue/etc after an incomplete miscarriage.  I inserted 3 doses (every 6 hours as prescribed of 800 mcg inserted vaginally).  I was to insert another dose ever 6 hours if I did not have any results with the prior dose.  Okay, I did this starting Wednesday pm, into Thursday am.  I have had some cramping, and small blood clots, but no passing fetal tissue that I can tell.  I read on some websites that one woman said that her medication didn't work until exactly one week later, then excuse the term, but "all hell broke loose".  I so wish this would happen for me as I do not want (nor does my doctor) a d&c, as we want to try and get pregnant again as soon as possible.  (oh, I was suppose to be 10 weeks along, but was told the baby stopped growing around 6 weeks).  Does anyone have any experience in this department?  If so, how long did it take for the medication to work for you?  Thanks in advance for any help/advise.

I'm going through something similar right now. I've passed several clots including (fist like clot with fetus inside) very noticeable fetus @ 10 wks 5 days. My first choice was to have D&C but a gut feeling stopped me. Thinking just like  having an abortion same process too many times your body begins to react to this treatment. Its a hard decision but its only yours. I pray I chose the right option for me...praying for healthy speedy recovery.

Thanks everyone!  I did finally end up passing what I believe to be everything that needed to pass on the 6th day.  I truly had given up.  I had what I consider to be very minimal bleeding with little blood clots, nothing like what I was told would happen, and VERY little pain.  It took about 30 minutes from start to finish (some would come, stop, then 10 minutes later again, etc.), when it started expelling, and thank goodness you could not identify what it was other than the grayish color, and the texture of the clost was definately not like a normal clot (sorry if thats too much information).  I still must go to the doctor and make sure it's all passed, I sure do hope so.  Thanks for all of the D&C advise, if I must have one done now, I will not be as worried as before.  I wish all you ladies much blessing and love.  Thanks again.  : ))))))

I used misoprostol after my 2nd miscarriage (I've had 3...this one occurred at 8 weeks...one week there was a heartbeat, the next week, the baby no longer had a heartbeat :-( ). It took over 2 weeks and 2 doses and in the end I had to have a D&C anyway, because all of the tissue refused to pass. This happens in only about 5% of cases. Lucky me. I thought the stuff was absolutely awful and God-willing, will never have to use it again. Also, a D&C should have no effect on your ability to get pregnant. After my D&C I got pregnant again 4 months later. Unfortunately, that too ended (chemical pregnancy), but now I am 21 weeks pregnant with my 1st baby (at age 40!) with no medical intervention. Best of luck to you!

I have had 2 miscarriages in a row.  I had a DNC both times.  After my first miscarriage I only had to wait one cycle before trying again and I got pregnant first month of trying.  Unfortunately that one ended up being a blighted ovum.
I am waiting for my first period since my last DNC. I find it took me 6 weeks to get one last time.  We are going to try for a baby maybe next month.
I would recommend considering getting a DNC or atleast talking to your doctor about it if you Still have not passed all the tissue.  The procedure is quick and really not that bad.  One advantage of a DNC is being able to get testing gone if your doctor is willing.

I have never seen or even heard from clots as big as a fist.... I believe that with my Cytotec miscarriage the biggest blood clot was just slightly bigger than a quarter.

I have had 4 miscarriages and I had way more blood/clots with my last miscarriage, a D&C, than with my Cytotec miscarriage. My Cytotec miscarriage was actually the shortest out of all of them in terms of bleeding - and not much pain neither. I was sick... but because of the pain killers I had taken that had given me nausea!

Has you OB-Gyn checked your HCG level after you took the pills? She should to make sure it goes down to 0. Ask her to check it to see where you stand right now... and then try to have her check it a few days later!

As for conceiving after a D&C, not sure about the statistics but I conceived my only child after my 3rd miscarriage... a D&C (my 1st one)! Stay hopeful!!

Thanks so much for your replies.  I'm still trying to be patient, and hope the pills worked, with a delayed response.  Okay, it's been over 4 days, so of course I'm getting worried.  Thanks for letting me know also what to look for, as I know it seems so crude to ask, I truly had no idea what to watch for.  If I must have the D&C, I guess it will be okay, I've read that after the procedure, a person is 25% more likely to have a miscarriage on their next pregnancy, not sure if thats the truth, but thats what I read on the internet.  Who knows though, there is sooooooo much info on there, a lot of which contradicts the other info.  Thanks again for responding, I sure could use all of the help that I can get now.  : ))))

Hi,

I used it after my last miscarriage at about 8 weeks pregnant when the baby had stopped growing.  I miscarried about 6 hours after the drug was inserted.  There was not much bleeding in my case and I actually expelled the placenta (it was a large round piece of tissue).  After the placenta came out there was not much bleeding any more... the pain was manageable with paracetamol....

That was my second assisted miscarriage (and the first was with D&C).  I had a good experience with misoprostol.

Hi there. I'm sorry for what you are going through.  I have taken this twice, and both times did not have a positive reaction unfortunately.  I had extreme bleeding and both times wound up having an emergency d&c.  So for me, it is not something I would use again.  However, my Dr. tells me my situation is not the norm, and that most can use this successfully.

I know a lot of women do try to avoid a d&c.  I've had 4 of them now with no complications, and only had to wait 1 cycle to try again.  Not encouraging you to go that route, just saying that for most it is a simple process with no complications.  All the best to you.

Hi, My Dr. said to expect clots that could be as big as my fist.  She also had to go through the process and said that she couldn't believe how much blood she lost, and was very surprised that more of her patients didn't contact her regarding the extreme blood loss.  I've read on the web that some women didn't have very large blood clots at all, but passed everything.  It's all so confusing.  I would have thought with the large consecutive doses of the medication that it would have happened, fast and furious.  But of course no such luck.  I guess perhaps I should be more patient.  Sure is hard to be patient at this stage though.  Thanks for responding.  : )

I took Cytotec once for a blighted ovum (embryo did not develop), I took only 2 pills and passed everything a few hours after - I was at 11 weeks. In my case it was very fast and not a whole lot of bleeding. I believe I saw a big clot - not sure, it has been several years.

What does you OB-Gyn say?
