I'm not in this age group. I'll be 20 by delivery. I just got the news that my blood work came back positive for DS & I have a 1 in 24 chance. I'm very nervous & wanted to know if anyone had info on this ratio.

I took the test a few weeks ago and it came out positive...there's actually another test you can take and it's 99% accurate...it's called Harmony...well turns out I was a false positive and my percentage went from 1 out 112 to 1 out of 10,000...I had to see a specialist for this but just ask questions about harmony...it's safer than the amniocentesis...they just draw blood from your arm...good luck and don't stress I know it's easier said than done but I was just in your shoes a few days ago

Mine came back for ds and then found out thru sg that he had cleft/lip and palate since thats not detected thru blood

I am pregnant with my fourth child and never got any extra testing. I figured I wanted my children regardless. If you research some of the tests you can get false positive results, and you'll just spend your pregnancy freaking out. Good luck and I wish you and your baby the best!

We fid the 12 weeks scan and I ended up doing the blood work around 30 weeks. My 12 week scan didn't show anything, but since my baby was under the 10th percentile,  the amnio and blood work was open to us. Luckily my insurance covered most of it because that total bill was over 3500.

me and my husband also declined having the test as we believe it wont change how we feel about this baby anyways , in fact our dr told us him and his wife also opted to not have the tests done either when they were expecting. this baby to us is a miracle it took us 12yrs to happen and nothing would make use terminate this pregnancy. If people want to test than that's ok as well , I am not against testing or anything.. its just not for us.

Can I just say that ds, while a scary diagnosis, is not the only possibility you face when you have a child. My 18yo was born seemingly healthy after a 12hr labor which turned into a c-section when they became concerned because his heart rate would bottom out with every contraction. It wasn't until he was 2 1/2 that we noticed he was different (violent outbursts, emotional breakdowns-just to name a couple) & it took until he was 4 to get his diagnoses: PDD-nos (a form of autism), ODD, ADHD, depression, & mental retardation. He will forever be a child mentally. There was no test for this during my pregnancy, & I firmly believe if the dr. had opted for the c-section much earlier, the outcome would have been much different.
My point is, tests can't prepare us for every problem or illness that may come up, but we still love our kids no matter what. It would have been so nice to know how my son would be while I was pregnant, but he's still who he is & I wouldn't trade him for the world. I know most moms feel the same.

I've heard a lot of people getting a false positive on the first blood test. I did the panorama, it was a requirement of my Dr because I will be 37 when I deliver. I would call your Dr and see if they can get you pre-approved by our insurance. Personally, I would rather have blood drawn then to do the amnio.

We declined it too. I didn't want a amniocentesis and did not want any chance of false worry. We will love our baby regardless. The only positive to the test would to be prepared to deal with whatever situation we need to. There are other blood tests they can do to check, talk to your doctor first. You sound like you will be a good mother regardless of the situation, good luck and best wishes!

Animocentesis test also can tell yu the dender or the baby and it is cover by medicaid so its definitely cheaper.

I am glad to hear that my husband I are not the only ones declining the 12 week scan for ds.  There is no way in wld terminate this pregnancy even if there was a chance of ds.  I would not do things any differently. A person is a person no matter what!

We declined the 12wk scan but then our anatomy scan identified indicators of downs. We are going through a rollercoaster of emotions with drs at the hospital asking if we want to do more testing do we want to consider termination. Finally got to speak to ob today and he asked why we declined it in the first place which really clarified for us that our decision remains unchanged. We do not want to know because we wouldn't terminate and already having immediate relatives with downs syndrome we know we would cope and know that there's nothing you can do to prepare. The baby will still be an individual with their own personality, likes and dislikes. That's just our situation and opinion tho. You've got to do what suits you and your family. Ask your doctor if they can do a panorama test on you. It's extensive blood work that reviews all the dna & genetics of your baby. The panorama is replacing the amnio. They can even tell you the sex of the baby with this test. I had it done & am very thankful I did, but it is expensive. Our insurance didn't cover it & the bill was just under $3000.

Im 21 and also had to get tested for ds the only way to kno for sure is to do amniocentesis it wasnt as scary as I thought the do hve to stick a needle thru ur belly n draw out fluid and test it but its ur choice I did it with both pregnancies my babies are fine im one the would rather know & prepare for it than to not to kno whether or no my baby has it
