Failed the 3 hour glucose!

Hi ladies...I'm so sad. And scared. I failed the 3 hour by 7 points. They said it didn't scream insulin shots, but a trip to the dietitian and 1800 calorie diet. Possible early induce. Is that because he will be too big? I read on here, that sometimes the baby shoulders get broken trying to deliver, and possible nerve damage! That is horrifing to me! I am so freaking out about this. I have gained 23lbs and 10 weeks to go. I am still with in normal range for the weight gain, so I don't really know about this...I am waiting for the Doc's to call me back and tell me what to do! I'm so worried now, I am afraid to eat at all and make this poor baby get bigger and bigger to the point that complications occur...I don't know what to do! He looks so cute in the U/S! I just really don't feel like anything is wrong with my pregnancy. So, any body else ever go through this and have a normal outcome for you and baby? I really have no idea of the facts yet...still waiting for doc's to call!! Just bumming over here...:O( Cari

I wonder which standard they are going by.  I know there are two.  I failed the more conservative one and passed the less conservative on my the skin of my teeth.  My dr just had me watch what I ate.  It all turned out fine.  

Don't worry.. yours is probably very similar to what mine was.  Just be extra conscious of your carb intake...  find alternate snacks. In the end, I was eating bell peppers and cucumbers daily.

Thanks for responding girls! I would rather read anything you all to say than Google right! Yesterday was just a kinda blow with the results and not having any knowledge on the subject. But today I got my meter, and stuck my finger before lunch and will do it again in 2 hours...so on...and so on...So, I'm okay! I will do my best and more than likely be a bit hungry till I get used to this, but it is okay! I'm not gonna freak out anymore. I'm over it and wishing us all well in the weeks to come! Tricia-- wow, your babies are healthy! I'm so glad your levels are evening out for you. Mine don't really seem to be too bad so far...just scary to think of the complications ya know! I'm almost 24 weeks and was diagnosed with GD two weeks ago. We tried controlling it with diet at first. I had to monitor my blood sugar four times a day - fasting in the morning and one hour after every meal. I did really well during the day after meals...I quickly figured out what effected my blood sugar and what worked well for me. I kept my BS levels under the max (under 140 after meals). But my fasting blood sugar in the morning was too high - and I couldn't do anything about that. (MD wanted it below 90 in the morning.) So my MD put me on 5 units of insulin before bed. My husband gives me the injections. It's doing the trick...my blood sugar has been great for the last week. I'm already seeing a perinatologist due to my age...so they just continued my referrals to him, and he's going to be doing and ultrasound every 2-3 weeks to monitor the baby's size. Doctor said that he will induce me at 37 weeks if the baby is too large. I was freaked out at first, too...but it really isn't that bad, and I'm confident that my MD is steering me in the right direction. My son would have been a big baby, and I didn't have GD with him...my water broke at 36.5 weeks. He was almost 9 pounds. So, he would have been about 12 pounds full-term. I think this is also one of the reasons my MD is being so cautious. Anyway...don't read about the horror stories and just focus on eating healthy and following your doctor's orders regarding diet and blood sugar. You and your baby will be fine!

I didn't have gestational diabetes but my babies were very big. I had my daughter when I was 18 and she was 10lbs 2 1/2oz. The doctor had to break her collar bone to deliver her because her head was stuck. It's better if the doctor does it because then it's a clean break. She had to have her arm in a long sleeve shirt with it pinned across her chest for 2 wks. She healed just fine and didn't have nerve damage or anything else. Now they monitor babies weight so I really don't think you will have to worry. C-sections are always and option if they get too big. I wouldn't worry about it. The doctor is doing the right thing by monitoring you and sending you to a dietician. Hang in there...everything will be just fine.  Best of luck to you.

I already had the one hour and failed that so I now did the 3 hour! And a big failure also! Yes candy is evil!!

I'm just curious, don't you get the 1hr glucose first?  Why did you have a 3hr?  Is this the one given at 24wks?  I'm 23 wks now, and am wondering if I'll pass mine too : O   Easter candy is NOT helping!!!!

Hey Cari- I responded to your other post earlier. The possibility to induce is because of the weight of the baby. Most woman who are diagnosed and treated and have everything under control do just fine. They will just watch the growth of the baby, and you'll be on a strict diet ( so he doesn't get too big) and keep your sugars under control. Don't worry too much, I know easier said then done. This is fairly common and I am sure everything will be fine. If worst comes to worst you'll have a c sec. Try not to worry too much, you don't want high blood pressure too.
