The nightgown is a little better if its a zip up in the front one. To me if helps nursing while in the hospital without having to put on one of their hospital gowns
Your hairbrush. You will want to shower after childbirth, and the hospital only provides a small hard plastic comb. Ouch.
There are some really great lists on Pinterest too. Some things I like to add are: a maxi dress to go home in, a wrap sweater/cardigan, sports bra style nursing bras, Starbucks instant coffee packs, sleeping mask, Chapstick, flip flops (a old/cheap pair I can toss), my old sleepers (I toss those 2, hospitals are dirty, get a nice new fluffy pair to have once at home), a long nighty dress/slip I can still nurse in, face cleansing wipes, hair ties/clips, change for vending machine, snacks, & some instant soup cups.
Nightgown rather than PJ pants (easier access for the nurse to check and no pressure against scar if you get a c section), flip flops for the shower, toiletries, cell phone charger, camera, extra batteries, reading material, snacks, socks, maternity going home outfit, granny panties, an eye mask, baby memories book, makeup (if you feel like it), and lip chap. I'd ask the hospital what they provide for pads, mesh underwear, Peri bottle, baby etc. My hospital didn't really provide me with a towel for the shower so I'm bringing my own this time. I swear by adult diapers to contain the mess and keep from ruining your clothes. Maybe a hair dryer or straightener or at least a hair elastic or two. For baby you really only need a going home outfit. They keep baby swaddled and provide you with diapers while you're there. Oh and if you're planning to breastfeed you may want a nursing bra, breast pads, and lanolin.
I cant post the link here for some reason... But if you google "what to pack before labor" there's a few really helpful articles that list what to bring. I'm wondering the same thing.
