IVF

I had IVF in June. They did a pregnacy test 11 days after tranferring 3 embryos. The test was negative (hcg <1.00). They had me stop all meds, and my period did come within 1 week (very different from any other). A week after the test, I began to have so many pregnacy symptoms. I have 4 children so I am very aware of the changes my body goes through during pregnacy. All of these things were happening to me. I went to my primary physician who suggested pregnacy after hearing my symptoms but test came back negative. They could not find no other health problem to cause symptoms. IVF doctor refused to entertain my concern because the blood test was negative and my period had come. Well, after a trip to the emergency room an ultrasound confirmed that I am approx. 7 weeks pregnant which means that I DID actually conceive from the IVF. Has this ever been heard of before? Three negative test (blood, hpt, urine at clinic) AND period but was pregnant. Why the low hcg and negative results?

I did a 5 day transfer and I also didn't have a beta until 10 days after the transfer which would've been day 14 after ovulation and that's true most fo the time for three day transfers.  I bet too that's what happened - that they did the beta too early.  Anyway, congratulations on your pregnancy - jen

The only answers that I have gotten to this situation was that my body was slow to produce hcg. I have gotten a few stories of how some women have negative "blood test" up until their 3rd and 4th months of pregnacy. Also, I was told that if the embryo attached late then the test at 11 days after transfer would not have detected hcg yet. I hear that alot of Drs don't even do the first test til day 14. I guess it was just too early.

I too have never heard of that situation - UNTIL I watched this show called "I Didn't Even Know I Was Pregnant".  On that show, there was a 57 (yes 57) year old woman who went through a donor egg IVF cycle & did have a positive beta (they transferred three embies).  Four weeks later, she miscarried.  She then lost a lot of weight & then started having extreme fatigue for a while.  After developing a mass in her stomach, her doctor was convinced she had ovarian cancer so he sent her for a u/s.  Come to find out, she was nearly 29 1/2 weeks pregnant w/a singleton!!!  The best they could figure out what happened is that two of the embies stopped growing and she miscarried those but kept the other one.  How they missed that on an early u/s I don't know - the show didn't explain that part.

Your story reminds me a bit of that - do you think your period could be that you miscarried one of the embies that originally implanted?  Your hcg must've been really, really slow to start or you were miscarrying one of the embies & that caused the hcg to be off - heck I don't know.  this is the first time I've ever heard of a blood beta be wrong.  What's your beta now?

Wow, never heard that before.  I can understand the urine tests, but the bloodwork really surprises me. I don't see how you could possibly have a 7 week fetus, but not a high enough level of HCG to be picked up in either.  May I ask....was there a heartbeat and everything?  This is difficult to understand for sure.

Holy moly! I have no idea how that could have happened there. There's no way the embryo had not attached already by 11 days after transfer...and certainly by the time you had your blood test. But congratulations!!!! That will be quite a story to tell one day!

What did your RE say after your got the pregnancy confirmed?
