Thinking of you- hope all is ok.
I went to the Dr today- I ahve an amnio scheduled for two weeks- now they wanna also send me for the blood work on the smae day_???? the MAFP- etc. I dont get it. Hope you get good news and they aren't making you wait too long. :)
I'm thinking of you too, any word yet???
Thinking of you and wishing you the very best!
Thinking of you and your son today!
Thinking of you today and hope you get the best news possible.
I think JourneyJoJo brings up a vital point. Although doctors (most of them, anyway) are caring, they have been hammered by lawsuits to the point that the practice of appropriate bedside manner is impeded. If you were _not_ given overly alarming interpretations of your tests, you might later claim they were liable if you gave birth to a challenged child, and assert that you were not advised to do the amnio. So, if there's even a hint that your chances of a "normal" child are less than 100%, they will alarm you and push you in the direction of more testing.
In other words, what you are hearing is TREMENDOUSLY skewed. It's a very difficult situation for both health professionals and patients - and this applies to many other areas of medicine as well.
So, try not to go crazy with worry. Remember that the 1:1 mother had a 100% healthy baby - so we know how much weight to give these ratios.
Best wishes,
~Wendy
When I was freaking out because my OB is sending me for a repeat u/s to investigate a "marginally short femur", a friend of mine who does medical-legal reports on botched deliveries told me that one of the reasons that OBs need to investigate everything is because of lawsuits. In fact, many OB/GYNs give up the OB part of their practice because of the high cost of liability insurance and potential of being sued. As a result, they follow-through on everything, even if they think everything will be fine. In my case, I was concerned that it was an indication of DS. If it WAS an indication of DS and my OB did NOT discuss this with me and did not offer me/recommend an amnio (which she has not), then I would have a valid case to sue my OB. Yes, it's unnecessary stress for us, but they're also protecting their own butts. I hope for both of us that it's just unnecessary stress.
Hey girls, thanks so much for your support.
Just as an FYI...I already had the fist trimester NT scan which showed scan fine (well, neck fold 2.89 they thought was "concerning), every thing else was fine..nasal bone, etc) what brought my numbers down was my blood test.
Shocked at 18 (16 w GA) that a 5.22 nuchal is a bifg deal as I read anything over 6 is concerning. DR said heart was fine, femurs fine, nasal bone there but "small"...finger look "suspicious".
Thisis what pisses me off...It seemed to me the DR was pushing me to belive their was an issue and I NEEDED an amnio. she kept saying "I'm so sorry to tell you this"..her bed side manner was horrible. Asked how aftren she gets 50% ratio with good result, she said "Had a 1:1 and baby came out fine". WTF? 100% was given to some poor women and her baby is fine? How is that possible?
If all turns out fine tomorrow, I am going to blast a post on here for everyone not to do these wasteful tests!
I will say a prayer for you. I bet everything is just going to be okay. Try not to stress and please keep us posted and let us know about your (I just know) good news on Monday.
Thinking of you and I'll be watching for your follow-up post. Take care.
Thinking of you at this stressful time. I too had a not so good nuchal fold result so went ahead withe the cvs right there and then, the most agonising 24 hours of my life I can say. No other markers were found just like you and you know what he was perfectly healthy so all that worry for nothing.I think there's a lot to be said for all this early testing that is available in todays times, sometimes I think it just creates unecessary worry. We are all thinking of you and PLEASE let us know your outcome we will be waiting
Take care
Thinking of you (((hugs))) Either way, you 2 are going to be GREAT parents, & this little guy is blessed to be born into such loving home;) Where he so very wanted.
XxXxXxXxXx's laura
something else I found
Percentage of Down's syndrome fetuses with nuchal fold > 6 mm after 16 weeks vary from 69% (Benacerraf 1991) to as low as 3.8% (Grandjean 1995) in different reports. A mean value of about 50% can be obtained from different reports.
more than 6....
yea seems a little old for the NT
The NT scan must be done when you're between 11 and 14 weeks pregnant. (The last day you can have it done is the day you turn 13 weeks and 6 days pregnant.) It's usually offered along with a blood test in what's known as first-trimester combined screening.
isn't 16 w a little old for the NF?
Sorry you have to wait until Monday. I hate the waiting.... you're in my thoughts. Please let us know what happens. Anyway- congrats on having a little boy! Boys are so much fun :)
i feel like i am repeating what everyone else is saying...but try and hang in there thru the weekend! i will be praying for your little man ans well as for you! please keep us posted! i know uts easier said then done...but try!
trish
I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. I know it's difficult when you keep getting new "possibilities" thrown into the mix. I had my amnio last week right after my anatomy scan. My blood test was in the positive range for Down's & each baby had choroid plexus cysts & our boy also had an echogenic cardiac marker, but 7 agonizing days later, we got good results. I know how you feel. We already love our little ones, so it wouldn't have made a difference, but we still want the very best for them :) The thought of your precious little one having a difficult time can be heart wrenching, but stay positive for his sake & I'll be saying an extra prayer for you both :) Take care!!!
I have to agree with everything Pamela has said. Honestly hon, I am just going to say congrats on your baby boy and welcome to Team Blue!! I know this is going to be a hellish weekend for you, I am so glad you went with FISH. I went that route as well. Also wanted to let you know that at my level 2 my little guy had whitish intenstines as well, and upon further examination, the Dr. determined it to be from swallowed amniotic fluid. Keep it in perspective sweets, there is as good a chance your little man is just fine as there is that he has DS. I will be watching monday for your update and in the meantime am sending all kinds of positive thoughts your way. XOXO.
Slightly white intestines can be caused by baby swallowing amniotic fluid, and is common. The nasal bone was there, small, but there!! Just curious, did you have a 1st trimester screening? If so, were the results ok, or did your son have a high NF measurement then?
Ok....I'm going to let you rest now....I'm thinking of you.
Oh, I'm so sorry for the stress this must be causing you. I will also keep you and your little boy in my thoughts and prayers. That is great that you were able to do the quick results version of the amnio. I hope Monday comes very quickly for you.
Hang in there!!
Kara
Thank you all....having him have DS would not make any difference in my love for him, would not change anything.
Will know by Monday (FISH) if it is positive. Just a bit sad but ok.
Intestines looked "slightly white" and nasal bone was there but "small"
Other than that....everything else was ok....
I just wanted to reiterate again...if the only marker detected was a high NF, and no other markers were noted...I'd be willing to bet, your son just has a little thicker than average neck. I found some other info online of high NF's at your stage of pregnancy, and some measurements are over 6 and the babies were born completely healthy!
I just want to shed some light, on what you may be fearing the worst. : )
Hi Court
I'm so sorry your testing has only added to your stress and alarm, but it's such wonderful news that you've got a little boy on the way! Whatever happens, we're all here, thinking of you and your baby boy, and sending all our best wishes your way!
Hugs,
Bonnie
