No Clomid for the old bird

My RE told me clomid works very poorly on older women ( not sure who is talking about :) ), and can make the uterin lining very thin, he does not recomend it for me.  Anyone hear anything different from their doctor?
Also - I usually have a 2 day period with my LP at about 9-10 days.  I have been taking VB6 100mg reguarly and my LP is now 11 days.  Well my period  ia now on day 3 this month so far.  Do you think that means I had more lining to shed - that would be a good thing. Right?

Are longer periods a sign of a healthier lining then??

Hi Miranda,
I haven't heard of taking VC for fertility, but I added it to my new perimenopause regime anyway.  I take 3000mg a day.  I also take VB6 100mg and VB12 500 mg each.  I take B complex and a multi/folic acid.
I think its the B6 that has been helping my LP.  Google it - lots of chatter on this subject.

Hi Lisa,
Yes, I've also heard that Clomid reduces the uterine lining.

I'm very surprised to hear that Femara has been used; as Alikat mentioned, it is prescribed for breast cancer.  My mother took it a few years ago for her treatment. (Yet another reason for my hesitation over taking drugs that may affect my hormones:(

Have you heard of taking Vitamin C?  It's supposed to improve fertility in women with a shortened luteal phase.

LOL I've always hated the length of my periods - 5 to 7 days - so does this mean it's a good thing?!

i have used both clomid and femara, prescribed by my RE.  i didn't get pg, but he felt femara to be a better drug.

yes, it helps in the same way as clomid.  you take it the same cycle days as clomid, so no worry of birth defect.  birth defects only occur if you take while pg (and it was originally a drug for breast cancer, and happened to get cancer patients pregnant, that's how it's use was discovered).

Femara has been banned in Canada because it apparently can cause birth defects... and Clomid appears to be safe in that department... I don't know about the lining. I've heard it said before but my gynecologist and fertility expert told me that was untrue. They prescribe it to anyone having trouble conceiving. I was 37 years old with a perfect cycle. Ovulated every 28 days, always on time. They still prescribed it.

good luck

I have heard a bit about femara.  I have heard the side effects are not as bad as with clomid.  Do you know if that is true?  And also, does it also help with luteal phase like clomid does?  I would be very interested in switching if that is the case.  What are your thoughts?

yes it can thin lining, did you ask him about using femara?  it has the same effect as clomid, but does not thin lining.  also, tell him you want to try, even if the success rate is low.  why not????

Yes, it is true that it can thin the lining.  Hence the daily baby asprin, which apparantly helps build it up.  But my OB didn't say anything about that being a problem with older women.  Her perspective was that as it helps increase progesterone, and lengthen the luteal phase, then it is a positive.  Now keep in mind, she is an OB, not an RE.  I am going to ask her more about it at my next appointment, as that has me curious.  I knew about the thinning of the lining, but want to clarify the "older women" issue.

I don't know if a longer period is a good thing in terms of the lining, but it would make sense to me if that was the case.  Good luck on next O!!!!
