Pregnancy chances?

Hi - new here (another Brit by the way). I'm 38 and married nearly two years in June and heard the words from the doctor just this Monday gone: "it's very unlikely you will ever get pregnant", devastating news! I'm not really sure why I am writing this; I know I am miles from home and perhaps just looking for company and support from people who have heard similar news....My doctor said that before we consider egg donation (the prospect of that possibly being our only option hasn't really sunk in) he will put me on Clomid - I start next month.....
I would love for someone to drop by and comment and perhaps share some of this babydust I see you kindly wish for those needing it.

Thanks Joanne

We have been trying for well over a year - I just hoped this last month before I start Clomid we'd succeed - far out possibilty of course. I wish I had a good FSH!

Oops, my brain isn't as good as it used to be!

Well I had a good FSH but my Estradiol number was terrible (as far as I could tell from my research, it should have meant my eggs were not of good quality and wouldn't persevere (156 was the number) - low ovarian reserve. A good FSH number can be misleadingly low if your Estradiol number is way high (so its not really good, its fake good) but also it changes every month apparently.

I hope you get to try out your pre-seed before clomid kicks in.  The first 3 months we were trying I'm pretty sure we were doing everything right but no luck! The month we used pre-seed (1 tube, 1 time) we hit the jackpot (so to speak).

Don't give up! I'm 39, my fsh was GOOD (5 something) we conceived on the fourth month trying (with pre-seed) so getting pregnant in the first month of trying is a bit like winning the lottery :-O)  Rome wasn't built in a day!  Perfectly "young" healthy couples have only like a 20% chance of conceiving every month. But I do understand your disappointment, its just going to take hard work and perserverance.

Ex Brum,
Joanne

I guess it was PMS - I have had / am having the worst and earliest symptoms ever! It was too much to hope I could do it naturally.

I am also tired of people asking when we are going to have kids or hearing "if you need an excuse not have kids just look after ours for a while - that'll put you off". They don't know of course, and it's innocent, but it really hurts - it did a little even before I knew we'd have trouble conceiving, 'cos I've always known how old I am!

I know you feel happy for parents and preg friends but it still makes you ache inside.

I know how you feel - now X

i know how you feel. if one more close friend gets preg, i will probably have a panic attack. and i am not proud of it, but after 3 MCs it just hurts. i was on clomid too like agdal although i conceived without it. you will drop more eggs and double your chances each cycle. keep me posted.

Hi both! Thanks for writing. udbe - congratualtions on your pregnancy, I send you lots and lots of luck. I have this month for the first time ever purchased, and am using, an OPK! 2 days in and no indication yet but we'll see. This is my last chance naturally before I take the Clomid next month...

usuk: My "nob" (good old fashioned brit term lol) of a doctor is the only one I've got right now - and the only fertility specialist in our State apparently. He just seemed so dismissive - it seemed straight away telling me egg donor or adoption, "but I know you want to try so I'll prescribe you some Clomid, although it's very unlikely it'll work"     :'o(

usuk: I wish you and your Brit hubby all the best with this, and I hope your dreams come true.

My hubby is trying to understand how I feel, but I seem to have newborns all around me at the moment! I went to my first ever baseball match yesterday and the lady behind me was going into great detail about her young child and the one she was carrying due in November - this morning at breakfast someone sat at a table next to us and put the baby carrier with a tiny resident in it on the table in plain view! I know they dont know, but it seems I need reminding of my infertility at every turn :o(

I know I am being sensitive now but I hope I don't start seeng babies in everything I look at!!

Thanks for your support guys - It really helps me XXX

i'm all for docs being honest instead of giving false hope. but i am thinking get a new doc. one that will promise to try along with you and not one that has his mind made up and will be a total nob to you every time you want to have a test or try to conceive. yes i said nob - my husband is a brit :) and ps. i am 38 now so you are not the only 38 year old going through this. my doc is very practical and he is by no means a lovely mary poppins, but he knows how i feel and he has a heart under all that doctor lingo. good luck.

Rainy-- Don't give up.  I'm 36 and expecting hopefully if it sticks, my first child.   My doctor told me when I was 24 that I would never be able to get pregnant since my tubes were blocked.  After 14 years of unexplained infertility and many different treatments, I got pregnant last year only to loose that one but I'm pregnant again with a healthy baby now.

Also have you tried OPK's?  I always charted before however these last two cycles I've used the OPK's and got pregnant right away.

You know in all honesty, I am not sure.  I have definately heard of them being really high one month, and much lower later though.  I started googling high FSH levels, and there are some sites that recommended certainly dietary changes, supplements, etc. you can take that are supposed to help.  I have never tried this myself, so no idea if it works, but you might find some of the info interesting.  I really do wish you luck and SSBD!!

Hi! All the advise that ADGAL gave you is dead on... she knows her stuff!!

other than that, unless you have a medical past suggesting that you have fertility issues, I would simply start actively trying, take a prenatal every day, watch your weight, vut down on caffeeine and alcohol, exercise, take a DHEA supplement daily and have lots of unprotected sex at the right time of your cycle. That's what I did and despite an unfavorable diagnosis (less than 1% chance of conceiving because of a blocked fallopian tube) and a failed IVF, I am 38 years old about to give birth to a baby boy in a few weeks conceived completely naturally.

good luck...

ps obsessing over it is actually counter-productive... I know it's hard to stop the wheels from turning in your head but I tortured myself and obsessed over it for 2 years and it never worked.  I evenutually quit and decided to adopt and got pregnant 2 weeks after our 1st meeting with an adoption agency.

An RE is a reproductive encrinoligist (spelling?).  They specialize in fertility issues and high risk pregnancies.  There is no doubt 21 is very high.  However, I have seen women with high FSH levels conceive, although the chances are slimmer.  Sorry, not trying to be negative, just honest.  I am not sure if there is anything that can be done to lower those levels, but it is certainly worth asking.

I would give the chlomide a try, but if it were me, I would want to know if my FSH was always high or not.   If I may, I would love to give you a few tips about taking clomid.  One of the possible side effects is it can dry up your fertile mucus.  This is the the mucus your body naturally produces during your fertile period.  Starting about a week before you should ovulate, try to avoid anything that may dehydrate you such as alcohol or caffeine.  Drink tonnes of water and in order to help things along, you might want to try a product called pre-seed.  You can't use lubricant while trying to conceive as it can interfere with the sperm's ability to get where it needs to go.You may want to try a product called pre-seed.  It is a natural lubricant that mimics the natural lubricant your body produces during that time frame.  I live in Canada and haven't been able to find it in stores here, but I order it on-line and it works really well for me.  The other thing you can do is take Robitussin (yep, the cough syrup..lol).  Make sure you buy the type where Robitussin is the ONLY active ingredient.  I take a few teaspoons a day starting 4-5 days before ovulation.  It really really helps your body produce more natural mucus.  Without, the sperm cannot live, and you cannot conceive.  Good luck to you!!
