My doctor recommended that I continue with my prenatal vitamins while trying to concieve. I also take a folic acid supplement as it is a good idea to have it in your system for about 3 months before getting pregnant. Many times the most important vitamins the baby needs come into play before we even know we're pregnant so it's a good idea to have everything readily available for you little bean sprout! hehe
Hello! You should take folic acid supplements prior to and once you become pregnant--and continue taking them throughout your pregnancy...even if you are healthy and have a good diet. Folic acid is a vitamin which occurs naturally in certain foods. However, you need a good supply of folic acid when you are pregnant to help with the development of the baby. If you take folic acid in early pregnancy you reduce the risk of having a baby born with a spinal cord problem such as spina bifida. There is also evidence that folic acid also reduces the risk of having a baby born with a cleft lip and palate, a heart defect (congenital heart disease), and the risk of preterm labour. Once you become pregnant, your OB will give you a prescription for a prenatal vitamin that has the recommended dosage of floc acid. When I was TTC with both my children I took a good over the counter prenatal. Then once I became pregnant, I took a prescription prenatal which contained DHA. Best wishes to you!
As soon as I came off of the bc pills the doc told me to go right on the prenatal vitamins so that's what I did. I became pregnant about 6 months after being off of the pill. The doc prescribed additional folic acid b/c I am having twins and I just started taking DHA last week b/c my prenatal vitamins didn't have it and I was told that it's very good for the babies brain and eye development. I hope that this will help u to make the right decisions. Good luck & lots of baby dust thrown your way!!!! Let's us know how things go.
I was given the same info as Sue. I am not certain if they will actually help you conceive, but it is a very good thing to be on them when you do. Good luck.
Hi,
I've been told and read that you should start taking prenatals 3 months before you ttc and keep on them until you decide not to have any more children. Its never too late to start ! Folic too - before and during pregnancy - helps prevent neural tube defects and you don't want to start after you conceive. Good luck and SSBD to you - hope to hear some happy news from you soon :)
