Prometrium Suppositories

Ok, so just got my prescription filled for progesterone supplements.  This time it's a higher dosage...200mg X3, and it's the first time they have been prescribed to me in the form of vaginal suppositories.  I have taken them orally in the past (as per my OB), but my RE prefers them vaginally, mainly due to side effects like being tired.  And because this is a higher dosage then I've taken before, she's thinks this will be easier for me.  Ok, I'm good with that, but I have a few questions.

So, how far exactly do you push them up?  Is it messy?  Should I wear a pantyliner or something?   When I was taking them orally, it was 100mg X 3.  I was told I could take 1 in the morning, and 2 at night.  Can you do that with the vaginal suppositories?  I'd sort of like to avoid going into the women's bathroom at work and doing this..yikes.

Thanks for all your help ladies.  Your the best as always!!

Well, spoke to the nurse at the RE's office again today.  And 200mg X 3 is in fact the dosage they want me on.  They also would prefer I space it out, so that is what I shall do.  Still seems like a lot, but given that she specializes in pregnancy loss, I'm going to do as I am told!  On a happy note, that hpt was much darker today.  I am still worried about a chemical pregnancy given that I caved and tested so early, but the line getting darker is comforting. Usually for me with a chemical, that doesn't happen.  So so far, so good.  One day at a time, and celebrate every single day!

I agree with Heather....I think my dr is just trying to do anything he can think of since my losses are unexplained.  My levels were pretty average & even my betas were within normal range.

I only take 200 mg once a day (orally). It seems like there's a big difference between what we're all prescribed, but I'm sure they'll be checking your levels, and as long as they're normal, the dosage probably doesn't matter. My number was already in the upper 20s when I first got tested (before taking prometrium), so that might be why he only prescribed 200 mg a day.

My re had me do 400mg at bedtime only.  The vaginal ones are messy but doing it at bedtime wasn't so bad.  I would call and see if two at bedtime for u is ok.  It was for me.  Good luck and congrats!

I've only taken them orally but after my IVF I was on 200 mg 4 times a day prescribed by RE.  Not sure how this translates to the suppositories but thought this might help! Good luck!!

You may want to check with your doctor, but when i was on it and doing my obsessive googling I found women who did take that much and wondered if I was taking enough (I was on 200 2x's a day).

Mine are 100 MG once per day.  I always use mine at bedtime & I notice some discharge in the morning...totally recommend a pantyliner.  Not sure about the dosage or what's considered high.

Thanks so much.  Ok, I just tried them for the first time, and yep, messy.  Not too bad though.  One more question...does 200mg X 3 seem like a high dosage?  I just have never been on such a high amount before.  Mind you, it was an OB vs. an RE prescribing in the past.  I didn't take more then a glance at the prescription, and I'm wondering in the pharmacist could have made an error?

I was going to suggest the same as Christine...right before work, right after work and at bedtime. As for how far in, i would try to get it as close to the cervix as possible. I used prometrium vaginally once after an IUI (and crinone in my IVF cycle), and that's what I did. And yes, I would wear a pantyliner, because it can cause some creamy, yellowy discharge. Good luck!

I am thinking no to using two at same time. They should probably be spaced about 8 hours apart. Depending on your schedule, I am thinking put one in before work, one right when you get home and then the last right at bedtime...

I would put them in about as far as you would a tampon.  I am thinking I would wear a pantyliner but that may not be needed (I always wear a pantyliner with a tampon so would with a suppository also).

Keep in mind I haven't used this med...just giving general info on using vaginal suppositories...
