Sonohysterogram

Hi

I'm new to the forums so wanted to say hi to everyone. I'm 39 years old and my husband and I got married in 2009 (finally met my soul mate after many frogs).  We have been TTC since and due to my older age my family Dr. referred us to a fertility clinic.  We've had most of the preliminary tests done and so far there are no issues.  However, I've had two unsucessful attempts at a SONO and the second time I even had intravaginal Misoprostol (which gave me horrible cramping and nausea). After the second one, I had bleeding for a couple of days.

I'm wondering if anyone that has had a SONO before has had this happen? Does anyone know how necessary this test is and whether these multiple attempts are harmful in any way? (either than the fact that they always due it around ovulation time and because I'm in pain for a few days afterwards, kinda wards off the TTC attempts).

Thanks for your help!

Hopefulcb

I just came across your thread because I was researching this exact same problem. I had the same procedure done today but it failed and she could not get the catheter in. I have done a transvaginal ultrasound before without the catheter and it went fine but this one was awful with a lot of pain and even terrible cramping during and after. Did you end up going to see a new doctor after your first attempt failed? Were you ever given a reason while you were experiencing so much pain? Thanks!

Yay!!  The test is all done!  This Dr knew what he doing and it literally took him 5 minutes and 1 try and NO pain unlike the last one that took a whole hour and like 10 tries and lots of pain and bleeding.

He told me after the test that everything is normal so we were so relieved - I was really starting to think that something was wrong with me with two failed attempts by two Drs.

Anyway thanks everyone for the good vibes!

I've had SONO to check my tubes. It's a good test to see whether or not ur tubes are closed.

If they are closed ,u will have lots of pains since the dye will not go tru during the process.

If they are not closed,u will feel fine  plus ,the dye will clean up the tubes too....

wish the best....

Thank you for the support.  I hope everything is ok and it's just a matter of time before we conceive!

Thanks again for your comments.  I saw my Dr yesterday and he said all my other tests were normal so he really wanted to try the SONO again to see if something is wrong with my cervix or uterus.  Perhaps that is why they've had so much trouble doing the test.

Having it on Saturday! Hope all goes well!

I think this is the one I had.  The were also looking at my uterus as we knew my tubes weren't blocked.  I was having it due to multiple miscarriage, not inability to conceive.  They did do xrays with it as well though, so it sounds a bit different then others experience.  It was not super pleasant, but wasn't bad either.  The one where they insert the camera was worse (although still manageable).  Anyway, it was responsible for finding my fibroids and I did conceive shortly after the test.  Good luck to you!!

The tubes procedure can be quite painful for some women and if you already attempted it twice, it's unsure if you'll be able to do it successfully a 3rd time as you're really going to be very stressed - unless maybe (as I suggested above) you take a small tranquillizer beforehand (with your doctor approval of course).

I am not sure if any damage can be done by trying the procedure too often, probably not if your doctor is skilled. The question is: is this procedure really useful? Can't they see if the tubes work in an other way?

I think I would simply drop the procedure alltogether. In my case doing it did not change my infertility problems, I had multiple tests and I was labeled with unexplained infertility. Things got better for me only when I did an IVF 1.5 year later, even though I miscarried I was finally able to get pregnant after the IVF (miscarried a few more times, but finally pregnant now) - don't know why of course.

An other thing you can do, much less painful: have your thyroid checked. Along the way, I discovered I had mild hypothyroidism, not sure if treating this condition played a role or not for me, but sometimes it can increase infertility problems.

Thanks everyone!

I've set up an apt with my dr to discuss risks and benefit of having it done again, especially since I had so much bleeding and pain the second time they tried it.  I just want to ensure they can do it properly next time as you've all said that it's usually relatively easy.  I want to make sure they are not causing any damage with these attempts that could impact things in the future you know?

Anyway thanks again!

Yeah, they are 2 different tests......lucky me, I had both LOL  The one w/the saline solution, doesn't go into your tubes, just into your uterus is all, & all it's looking for is to see if the uterus has any scaring, or "issues' I guess it's super up close & PERSONAL LOL!
& it's done in the office, by your RE, it's not an X-ray. ;o)

ahhhh...sorry for the confusion...i feel silly...well i had the HSG (to check to see if tubes were blocked) it was kinda painful with cramping and light bleeding. if this is what you are referring to i am right with you...i can understand!!!!
i was under the impression it would just be done once...not repeatedly? but i could be wrong and talking about a different test?

I've had this done about 3 months ago, & it was nothing at all!  It just feels "silly" LOL a bunch of the saline runs down your fanny ;) & they put like a plastic baggy under your bottom so they can catch the saline as it comes out!  It's super fast like under a minute  or so.  It's pretty cool, cuz they get a super clear picture of your uterus, much better even than an HSG, which I had had that done too about 2 weeks prior to this test.
You can take some tylenol maybe, but honestly there is no reason for it to be painful, it's just awkward!
Good luck & don't worry too much ;o)

I am not sure if this the same test I had but I had one procedure where they injected me a dye with something like a catheter to check my tubes. It's not the most fun test, it's a bit unpleasant. I believe I had taken a pain killer right before the procedure, such as ibuprofen.

This test showed that everything was fine with my tubes. But my sister in law claimed that she had the same test years ago and that it was the procedure that helped her get pregnant!

Next time, take some ibuprofen or some Valium - I had an IVF and they gave me Valium right before it because of the discomfort so I assume it would be safe for this procedure as well. Speak about that with your doctor!

Thanks Tricia for the encouraging words.

I've done all that as well and have had no problems with the ultrasounds.  The test I am talking about is the one where they insert the catheter in your cervix and inject saline to look at your uterus. Have you ever had that one before?

From what I hear it is usually minor but  I'm wondering why I'm having so many problems
having it done. I'm also worried that repeating the test over and over could cause some damage?    Any thoughts?

Thanks

if i am understanding correctly you are going to a fertility clinic and they are monitoring your cycle thru ultrasound on the belly as well as transvaginally?

i went thru fertility with my 2nd child and everymonth for a series of days i would would get the ultrasounds(belly and transvaginal) before, during, and after each cycle. thats how they can see whats going on. its definately uncomfortable but necessary. if you are bleeding and or cramping i am assuming your body is just very sensitive.have you brought this up to the doctor? if not maybe you can talk to them. unfortunately this is what we have to go thru....try and hang in there!
