I can honestly say I have no idea how to interpret your test scores. There are no actual Dr.s on this forum, so as Tricia said, I think it might be difficult for anyone to tell you what they all mean.
I can say this..whether or not to do an amnio is an absolute personal choice. There is no right or wrong, only what is right for you and your DH. I would discuss the scores with your OB. You can also get a second opinion if you feel he/she is not giving you an informed opinion. Ulitimately you have to decide if the risk is worth the benefit...I will be having amnio as I know it;s what I need to do.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best, and know you have support here.
Take care, Amanda
the way my md explained it, at 37, you have one chance in 168 of having a child with a genetic anomaly. So the rule of thumb here is that any score lower than the normal average for your age should be followed up with an amnio.
Personnaly, I would have terminated had my exams revealed a baby with Trisomy. But again, that's a cultural thing (it is estimated that over 90% of women carrying a fetus with Trisomy terminates the pregnancy here in Quebec again).
It's your decision but Tricia is right, there is no point in getting an amnio (and risking a miscarriage or in utero infection) if terminating a pregnany is not an option for you.
Good luck
ps, keep in mind that the odds that you received, how ever frightening, are only ODDS. Statistically, you have a better chance of having a healthy baby than a child with Trisomy so don't freak out until you know what's going on for real, not just through speculation generated by a mathematical formula.
I don't think anyone here can give you a risk assessment based on your scores. We are all just moms and/or moms-to-be. :-) However, I have some thoughts. I think what you probably need to think about is this - if the amnio showed that the baby has Down Syndrome, would you terminate? If you wouldn't terminate, then there's no real value in getting the test unless you want the next several months to prepare. If you WOULD terminate or you would want to be prepared emotionally in advance for the birth of a Down child, then it seems that you really have no choice but to go ahead with the amnio. If you DO decide to do the amnio, you definately have the right to ask your doctor what his miscarriage rate is when performing the test. From what I understand, there is a *general risk of 1/300 or so...but that risk can go up or down depending on the individual MD's expertise in performing the test. Anyway...some things to think about. Whatever you decide, good luck and please keep us updated!
