Twins with high nuchal fold

Hello! I'm 39 y.o. and we're expecting di-di twins. Just got the result of the NT test and both babies have thick NT. Baby A has .39 mm with 1:5 risk for down syndrome. Baby B has .59 mm with 1:<5 risk for down syndrome. Dr. suggested doing amnio. I didn't want to do it but with such high risk, we wanted to know. I've been crying every night. Dr. also suggested selective termination if one is affected. Has anyone received the same risk assessment and turned out that both babies are fine? I'm so depressed. Please help!

I didn't have twins, I just have one, but I did come back very high risk for DS.  It was 1:13.  I had amnio, and all is well. He is perfectly healthy.  Remember that this test is simply a screen for risk assessment, it is not diagnostic.  It's scary I know, but honestly, most of the time these things turn out to be just fine.

My experience with amnio was not bad at all.  Pain wise it was much like the needle you get for freezing at the dentist.  There is a risk factor involved, however I asked the perinatologist and the clinic lots of questions, and they had an excellent success rate.  My procedure was actually very easy, and over quickly. I layed around for 3 days afterwards (they tell you to do this) and had no complications at all.  I am now 28 weeks, baby is doing great and I am relaxing and enjoying this pregnancy.

As for selective reduction if baby does have DS, that is an incredibly personal decision and one only you and your partner can answer. Take good care and I wish you all the best.

It's no problem posting twice. I just wanted you to know I responded on this forum :) Tge multiples forum seems rather slow, but I did respond again there! :) I agree that getting a second opinion might just worry you more. Try to stay as positive & relaxed as possible for the next two weeks & keep in mind that nothing you've been told is concrete. Your amnio may show two perfectly healthy babies :)  I will definitely let you know how my amnio goes.

Sorry for posting twice.  Thank you for the encouragement.  I was thinking of going for second opinion but also felt that it's just a waste of time.  Most likely, the dr will ask me to get an amnio anyway.  Please do share your experience.  It'll be my first time and I'm pretty scared.

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this ;( I understand how stressful the unknown can be, but it still is just a possibility & hopefully your amnio will alleviate your concerns.  In the meantime, although it's difficult, try to stay as positive as you can for your little ones. They need their mommy to remain strong ;)   Have you scheduled your amnio yet? I'm also pregnant with di-di twins. I didn't do the NT test, but did do a blood test that resulted in a positive for risk of Down's, 1:54. We're doing an amnio on Wednesday, and although I'm nervous, I know it's the best decision for us. If you have any questions re: amnio with di-di twins, I'll be able to share my experience after Wednesday's appt. Hang in there & best wishes for your babies ;)
