Hi Ladies what are your thoughts on coffee 1 small cup a day, also what do you think about diet drinks in moderation.  I love soda I know its bad for you and I am drinking tons of water these days but sometimes only a soda will do.

I have heard that diet soda is not as good for you while preg as reg soda. I think it has to do with the Aspartame in it. I drink a reg soda a week and drink decaf coffee. Something you may wanna try too is to make caffeinated coffee mixed with decaf when you make it. This way you can get off the coffee quicker and not get as shocked when you do. :)

Just wanted to chime in real quick.  I am so glad you posted this question.  I am normally a huge coffee drinker, but since we've been ttc I have cut back to about one cup a day, down from four.  Once I get a positive hpt I quit coffee completely.

I never drink soda so I would not know about that. But I drink coffee, a small cup a day generally, more milk than coffee which is way I have always drank it. Sometimes I'll feel I need more than my small cup but I don't dare to have an other one because of the pregnancy, even though 2 cups is considered OK.

PS: you can find sodas (diet or non diet) without caffeine... at least here in Utah!

I avoided caffeine in the first trimester but by the 2nd and to the end of the pregnancy I had one diet coke per day!

I am currently almost 20 weeks and I have had 1 small cup of coffee per day (less than 8 oz).  before I was pregnant I would drink 3-4 cups per day.  So when I tried to quit completely I had terrible headaches.  My doc said 1 cup per day is fine, especially if not having any will make you feel worse.  I am careful not to have any other caffeine during the day.  I am lucky because I was never a pop drinker.  I also drink 1 big glass of water with my coffee to counteract any dehydration effects.  Hope this helps!

I avoided caffeine completely the first trimester.  Mainly because it has been linked to miscarriage and I am really paranoid.  Since then I enjoy my morning coffee and I also let myself have a coke classic every day (I hate diet drinks).  My Dr. has assured me that a moderate amount of caffeine is fine, and I am so darned tired it really helps me get through the day.  My baby is doing great and all test results so far indicate he is healthy as can be.  No problems at all.  That being said, this again is one of those personal choices...you have to do what you are comfortable with.  If it stress' you out, then don't do it, it's just not worth it.  Good luck!!

When I found out I was pregnant I allowed myself to have 1 cup of regular coffee a day, but then the smell started to bother me so I just started drinking orange juice.  Now I'm good with decaf once in awhile.  I allow myself 1 can of diet soda a week and I usually only have 3/4 of the can.

I drank regular ginger ale in first trimester when I couldn't keep any food down, but I bought the stuff without High Fructose Corn Syrup-- Hansen's brand, if you're in the States, is sweetened with real cane sugar. Honestly, it's like 100 calories for the whole can-- better to drink real sugar than Splenda or Aspartame!

Both HFCS and artificial sweeteners are really horrible for your body. I'm sure your body can process one soda every so often without any major ill effects, but really... that stuff is nasty, and I wouldn't want to give it to my growing baby. I realize I'm probably on the extreme end of the scale (around this forum) with that opinion.

As for caffeine, my sister drank 1 small cup of coffee in the morning when she was pregnant, with her doctor's blessings, and her daughter is perfectly healthy and fine.
