do's and dont's

Hey ladies whats your opinion on getting hair colored/highlighted during pregnancy.  I have heard no problem go ahead but my hairdresser said there are not many studies  in reference to dying hair while pregnant and he would say dont do it.  Just wondering what you all think

I think the jury is out on this one from what I have read-- no conclusive research either way. A lot of holistically-minded docs will tell you to stay away from those chemicals entirely. Personally, I would wait.

I did ask my doctor about dye the hair or get highlight.. my doctor said if i can wait until baby is born is the best because she said it's not good for the baby....

If you can wait...then wait.... it's worth it..

Well- I have been pretty ,much completely gray since age 24- eeek. So what I do- is try and hold off on the dye as long as I can- with a hat- I just finally dyed it last week- as I had a big event- and I was umm- 10 weeks. (Dark blonde/light brown.) I use Nutrisse Garnier (sp?) I actually don't mind the smell- but I think perms/highlighting- the smell would probably gag me- and I would wait til after the 1st trimester.

I am not sure if the hairdresser has more POTENT dye than the OTC stuff?

I chose not to dye my hair due to lack of research.  I think the dark hair dyes are the problem, but I could be wrong.  You could try contacting Motherisk (http://www.motherisk.org/women/index.jsp).  They might have more info.

I'm glad it's winter because I borrowed some really cool hats from a friend of mine to cover up the grey.  I'm normally not a hat person, but it's better than showing the inches of roots!

What about Aveda?  Aren't they all natural and vegetable?  But I also think it's pricey!!!!

I've had mine done twice since finding out I was pregnant. I had them use foils so it wasn't close to the scalp.  My OB gave me the go ahead though, so I just did that as an extra precaution.

When I was pregnant with my daughter I was taking cosmetology in school and I was not allowed near the hair coloring or the perm solutions. I would say no until after you deliver! I know how you feel about the gray hair so check into the rinses they sell for now. I believe that they are safe but ask your doctor first. If not, the gray will have to do until your little one is safe in your arms. Nothing is worth the risk. Good luck to you.
