having d&c tomorrow for miscarriage--need advice--please help

I found out yesterday that I miscarried at some point between last Tues and yesterday (Monday). I was 7 weeks (starting my 8th).  My RE has me scheduled for a d&c tomorrow.  I am doing some research on the internet and came across articles on Asherman's syndrome (adhesions that form after a d&c from scarring). My RE did not even mention this as a possibility.
I am thinking about asking for the medication misoprostol and trying to do it w/out surgery.  Has anyone ever gone through a miscarriage at 7 weeks w misoprostal?  My dr didn't mention this as an option--but I figure most drs want the surgical option just b/c they're doctors anyway.
Please help. I do not want to do anything that will possible affect my future fertility

How did you feel after the D & C? Do you recommend it:? I am having the same problem as you did. The difference with me is that I had the miscarriage 5 weeks ago and have not stopped bleeding/spotting ever since. I still have tissue in my uterus and my doctor wants to give me cytotec. I am scared of both but want this over with soon. It's been way too long already. Hope to hear from you soon.

hi nshapland:

i'm sorry you are going tru this.i had two d&C in the past...he is kinda right actually..we all run to the internet to find out the magic answer ;yet don't even listen our own doc.s

i would say don't worry about D&c;it's very simple procedure  especialy if u had m&cin  week 7...he is also right that only this way they can test for tissues...

some women do prefere the naturall m&c or the pill to initiate it but both ar so much painfull emotionally...

this way will be easier ..good luck wish the best..baby dust

Thank you for your responses. I am going to go ahead and have the d&c.  I got two second opinions from obs who said if I want to get the tissue tested, I should do a d&c. I just wish my RE had been more thorough in his explanations.  It would have saved me a lot of anxiety. Instead he said "quit reading on the internet and just trust me..."

I had a total of 5 miscarriages and my first one I used misoprostol and it worked very well for me, no cramping at all.  The other 3 I had D&C's, which were fine, I choose the D&C so we could have the tissue tested.  Good luck and I wish you well.

Hey there.   I have had four m/c.  Two D&C's and two natural m/c.  All were around five weeks.  None of them were bad.  I took the misoprostal with the second D&C.  No complications.  The misoprostal was really no big deal at all.  Really just felt like severe AF off and on for about five hours.

There are pros and cons to doing it either way.  D&C might help you move onto the next cycle sooner, to conceive again.  But you may prefer to take the meds and take care of things in the privacy of your own home.

If your RE sees  no reason why you shouldn't be able to pass it on your own, you might want to go the natural route or misoprostal.  I think the further along you are, the less likely you are to pass it on your own.  Then there's a risk of infection if that happens.

I know someone who used misoprostal at nine weeks and all went well.

Good luck.  I hope I helped a little :(

It sounds like the other ladies pretty much covered it.  It is important to not be pushed into anything you aren't comfortable with.  My personal experience with D&C (I had 2 of them) was a good one. My personal experience with drugs to help along a m/c were not so good.  My point is that while the vast majority of procedures (D&C included) are safe and without long term complication, the risk is always there.  It is always best to know your options, do your homework and choose the best choice for you.

I am so very sorry for your loss.  I wish you well.

I miscarried at 9 weeks the first time and they did a D&C....I had no side effects from it....then got pregnant again....that time I had a pre-mature birth and the baby died later that night......they did a D&C that time because i couldn't naturally deliver the placenta naturally, again I have had no side effects.....after this second one, i went to a specialist who told me the chances of scaring or complications from a D&C are 1 in a million.....they are really rare, but to reassure me that i had no scarring they did an u/s and an in depth vaginal screening....and all looks normal.....
I understand your fear of complications, but I am sure you can find several sites where plenty of women have had D&Cs and had no complications.....and then had sucessful pregnancies again.....
I have never taken medication after a m/c to help the process so I can't comment on that personally but my sister took misoprostal and had a horrible reaction to it, and still had to have a D&C because of uteral infection.....so I would ask doctor about that before choosing it.....
Best of luck....

Hi so sorry to hear your news.  Did you get a second u/s to confirm the diagnosis ? I think that you should do what you think you're comfortable with - don't be pressured to go through a d& c if you're unsure.   I had 2 m/c's ( both I was about 8 weeks also ).  I opted to wait for natural m/c -  though I did have a prescription ready for cytotec both times in case I changed my mind. My OB told me I had 3 choices :

1)  you could go for d & c.   There are many women who've had no problems after the procedure and then there are those who have had an infection or issues after.

2)  You could go natural and wait it out

3) You could go natural with a little help from misoprostal/cytotec to speed it along.

As i said, there are many women who have had different experiences - choose what makes you feel less uneasy.  The thing is that YOU choose.   Good luck and if you need support Med Help is a great place to turn to .  We've all  been in your shoes - some many times - so you'll find many shoulders to lean on when you need it or if you need to vent.  We're all here for you.
