how to breast feed....

Anybody planning on breast feeding? if so, how are you learning how to? A lot of my friends said that breast feeding was not as easy as they thought. They expected the baby to just know what to do. My hospital is offering a class, but without the baby, I don't think it will make sense to me. Anyone know of a good DVD that shows you how? Or a book that gives good, clear instructions?

Thanks so much for any suggestions.

i have read a few books, and then our hospital has a lactation nurse that will come by our room when we are there to help out.. hopefully that will help! i might also go to the hospital class.. i also hear it can be difficult!

If the hospital offers a class then I'm sure they will have a lactation specialist on staff who will visit you immediately following the birth.

I would take the class.  I'm sure that you will learn a lot.  I had a little education during the "baby class" at the hospital in which I delivered my 1st.  But I didn't realize that I had inverted nipples that made breastfeeding even more difficult.  I had to stretch the fibers (muscles? ligaments?) that prevented my nipples from popping out when I pinched the areola on either side.  They actually retracted.  I had to do this while my daughter was learning & it was frustrating for both of us.  Talk about sore!

I am going to begin stretching quite in advance of the birth this time.  I used the Avent hand pump.  It actually worked better than the electric one.

You can also find local support through the La Leche League.

Good luck & don't worry!  You'll do fine.
