Hello Everyone,

What are the basics ?  Thanks !

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the tips - I didn't know that tops were made longer at the front.  I guess if I stick to my tops now pretty soon I'd look like I'm wearing crop top....with my bump hanging out a la Madonna ;)

I found an Old Navy that has a maternity section so I'm going to check out the jeans today.  I'm getting desperate because my pants don't button up anymore. I wear longer tops to cover the open fly but, feel paranoid all day.  My hand goes there - conscious and unconsciously - to check if I'm flashing my undies ( I probably look kinda weird or pervy).    I'm so glad to hear that I can wear a pair of maternity jeans throughout the whole pregnancy.  I wasn't sure how to go about the sizes and  wondering how big my bump would get.

Now I know how low I can pay for these clothes and I've got a list of "basics" thanks to you all -  Thanks again, much much appreciated !

Got mine at thrift shop-

SA on Friday and Sat has $5 for 5- I also sew- so I converted some of my older/mom jeans- zipper wont stay up pants- etc to maternity pants with a panel made from a strectch hoochie shirt.

MUST have are black pants and jeans-- for sure.

If you need to store buy things- I love Burlington- link- www.burlingtoncoatfactory.com they have mat jog sets for $10 and tops for $7-10. HTHS

I bought almost all my maternity clothes on eBay, and even wound up with extra.  They literally cost pennies on the dollar that way.

That said, my favorite and most useful items were from Motherhood Maternity, they were corduroy pants with the wide, soft-band waists, and cotton tee shirts and v-necked sweaters (I think I had about 4 tees and 2 sweaters, and I really turned to them a lot).  The fit is right, when you're buying a maternity tee or sweater, and something in the cut is cute and not just humongous.

A couple of months ago I went to Motherhood Maternity and bought 3 pairs of nice pants for $25-35 each, with spandex that can cover you whole belly from beginning to end of pregnancy: very comfortable! I need to dress professional for my job and so far I have bought nothing else, my tops still fit me.

Also, if you are careful about what style you buy, you can wear the clothes post-pregnancy too. For the majority of my pregnancy, I wore the "mid-tummy" pants (when I got bigger I needed the full-panel). After the baby, those mid-tummy pants were really comfortable. Plus, I bought a lot of tees and tanks from Motherhood. I love the ones that are gathered on the side. And they look like regular shirts, just a little longer in the front. So, after you have the baby, you can still wear them and they just look like normal tees. The longer length in front is comfortable because you get a little extra "tummy coverage." I agree, also, about Old Navy. I got some great deals there...not most well-made stuff in the world, but inexpensive and cute.

Hi there, I bought some Maternity pants from the Clearence section at Old Navy. Regular price $36. I only paid $9 each. Awesome deal. I think Old Navy would be your best bet.

Thanks pertykitty,

Where I am some of the Old navy stores had a maternity section but they seem to have disappeared in the ones I go to.  I like their stuff - want to look cute too. Will hunt out one with maternity wear.   Now, I'm wearing super baggy sweaters - still hiding my pg but, can't hide it for long.  After we make our announcement, if I wear my regular tops now - will they get overstretched for post pregnancy wear ?

Hi Courtcoop, riley10 and limpet,

Thanks for your tips - will definitely do a search on consignment shops / second hand clothing stores.  When I went to a maternity store to check out prices - jeans are around $69. And tops , well, they look like something I could get at a regular shop for a cheaper price.  The salesgirl , who looked really young and like she's never been pregnant in her life - said that you only need one pair for the whole pregnancy because they stretch as you grow.  She said that when they fit you, if you can put your hand/wrist down your waistband - that is the room you need to grow for the rest of the pregnancy.  I'm looking at her and wondering if she's scamming me.

it depends on what you want to spend.  old navy has a deal right now if you spend $100 you get $20 off (online) and they have some great sales.  i usually never spend much on maternity, but this time is my last and i want to look cute lol.

if you go to motherhood maternity they have a clearance section.  last time i was there they had some really cute shirt (ok mostly short sleeved but i live in cali lol) for less than $10.

ebay has great deals, but i have never been one to win lol.  some of the shirts that wrap can go longer because you can alter them as you grow, but we will change seasons soon.

I also went to consignment shops, the clothes you get their are great because you know they have only been used for a short period of time. I also borrowed from my friends and will give back what I borrowed plus lend them what I got since they all plan to have more children -  this worked out well because you will need different sizes as you get further along.

I only bought a few pairs of jeans (they are so comfortable!) and bought about 4 tops.  Thats it.  I'm currently not working so I pretty much wear sweats and sweatshirts now.  They still fit.  Some sweatshirts are getting snug around the middle.  The jeans were well worth buying new cause I wear them quite a bit.  The shirts, well, proabably didn't have to have 4 but I figured I'd sell them afterwards and get some money back.  It was just nice to have something to wear out instead of sweats and sweatshirts.  I went to Motherhood Maternity and bought shirts on sale - probably about $20 a shirt.

Hi Sue!
I have not had any desire to pay $40.00 for a maternity shirt, etc, that will only last a few months if that.
What I have been doing is going to local maternity/baby consignment shops and able to buy 4/5 outfits for $20.00 total bill.
Went yesterday, and found 6 gap maternity shirts for $4.00 each!
Do some research...you will find some great deals and bring them back to consignment shop when done to re-sell!
