I just realized we are talking about two separate things. A child born before Jan first can be a tax deduction so you pay less taxes. However, to get the child tax credit, the child has to be born 6 months prior to the end of the year (or live with you for at least half the year). Two different things. You don't get the credit (1,000 dollars) for an end of the year baby but you do get to claim them as a dependent which lowers your taxes.
I thought they have to be born 6 months before the year you are filling for too. They will ask you when filing if they were born six months before the year ended
Well, for federal income tax, everyone has the same laws as they come out of Washington and not your state--- if is federal. Dec. 31 11:59 pm is the cut off.
whoever was told they couldn't file their child born in November as a dependent for that year -- are you talking about local income tax or state? Federal income tax would allow you to claim that child up until it becomes Jan 1st of the new year. I had my baby a couple of days before the end of the month and he was a legit deduction. (along with medical expenses).
good luck
I believe that federal baby has to be born by 1159 Dec 31 to claim. And state would be whatever your individual states law is.
In va you have to have the baby before the new year to file for him/her.
In Pennsylvania the child has to be there for most of the year for you to claim them. My daughter was born in August a year and a half ago and we had to wait until the next year to claim her. I would look it up if I were you.
All u have to do is have the baby's ssn.honestly if u live in California u don't have to worry about ages.i haven't done that but I do know ppl around me that do that cause no matter what their depending on u and u have the right to claim ur child.
U have to have the baby before the end of the year
I'm not sure how it works in your states, but in South Dakota, your child has to be born before like six months into the year you are filing your taxes for. So, my son was born this November so I can't file him on my taxes until next year. It kinda ***** since our car broke down a week before I delivered and I had to have emergency gallbladder surgery two weeks after my delivery. But oh well. I would suggest looking into it on your state's official website.
I think the deadline is December 31 at 11:59.
I think as long as you have the baby before tax time you can get it cause you will probably need the baby social security card which will take a few weeks to get you can always call them up and ask =)
